i admittedly don't know much about our neighbor's preference for sports other than their passion for hockey and curling.

how do y'all feel about soccer? or do you call it football, eh?

no more so than America. It is seen as a game to involve your young kids in to geth them exercise.

maybe, but still, we don't care about soccer much

Maybe it's just where I am, but people know Soccer and there are games playing around all the time (EPL, Champions League and whatnot).

We like soccer, it's the most popular sport of all the kiddies (as opposed to say football/baseball in America?) - but not so much in terms of professionally.

this. all of my neices and my nephew play or have played. seems to be very popular with kids but not a lot of leagues form for players which continue to play into their teens. the older teams all seem to be travel teams, or in fairly competitive rec leagues.

Canada qualified once...ever...back in Mexico 86. And nothing since :p

We did host the under 20 FIFA back in 2007. Messi was here :)

I think I still have the final somewhere on my HDDs in 1080i

To us Canadians soccer is a sport to keep the cardio up through the brief summer months until the ponds freeze over again.

They like their soccer played on the ice, aka hockey.

Bandy doesn't seem very popular at all.

Surprised it's not super popular in Canada. They love their ice, and it's like a complete mix of soccer and hockey.

I've gone to some Vancouver Whitecaps games which are pretty fun (especially the heckling and jeering from the more hardcore fans behind the goals). Not as fun as an English Premier League game I went to in London a couple years ago (Tottenham vs. Portsmouth).

Really though, I love watching hockey more. The people in Canada who really care about soccer/football immigrated here from Italy, Spain, Mexico, France, England and other countries which actually perform well :D.

do you guys have a team competing in the world cup?

They have a team but they didn't qualify for the 2010 tournament. You can't just sign up for the Cup; when it's not going on, more often than not there are games being played to qualify for the next one.

Canada hasn't been very good for a while. They qualified once, in 86.

Everybody plays soccer here, whether it's as a kid, in high school or just random pickup games.

I played soccer as a kid but don't really follow it today. Lots of people at work seem to be into it though.

My GF shares some seasons tickets for the Toronto Football Club.

Toronto FC is currently 3rd in the Eastern Conference. The New York Red Bulls are 1st in the division. Leading overall by a wide margin is Los Angeles Galaxy in the Western Conference. That's the one Beckham played for.

I wonder how the turnout for that is. If they still can't fill the Dome for MLB when the Jays are doing good, I can't imagine BMO Field is getting any lovin'.

Soccer here is popular among the FOB immigrant population. Canadians generally have the same attitude towards it that Americans have. It's dull.

I've never really understood the draw soccer has. I suppose it's the simplicity of the game. It can be played anywhere with minimal equipment, which I guess is why it's exploded in the third world. I'm not a sports guy though so I never understood the draw of any of that stuff.
