Does California have the best higher education system in the union?

Probably the 5 most nationally recognized schools from CA (in no particular order):
Stanford
UC Berkeley
Cal Tech
UCLA
USC

But you also have lesser known schools like (in no particular order):
UC Davis
UC Irvine
UC San Diego
Cal Poly Pomona
Cal Poly SLO

No..0.o

But they do have VERY nice schools.

Massachusetts I'd have to say...with CA being comparable to a nationally respected set of schools like in VA.

We do have some pretty damn good schools but prepare to be flamed cus other states have maybe one or two good schools while Cali has many and these people love their middle of nowhere states.

Two of those five schools are private. If you're going to include private schools, I think Massachusetts has California beat.

1 or 2 great schools > tons of mediocre schools filled with fucking californians 😉

oh yea, your state is doing wonderful these days

read the news much?

Does California have the most engineers who also have a tan? Yes.
Does California have the most Ivy League schools? No.

Cus they go to these great school and learn a lot and are smart enough to leave the state.

Northeast definitely has Cali beat.

Also some of those lesser known schools are all very mediocre or below average. I would remove them from your list...

This. Massachusetts definitely.

The best. No. Mass has that beat.

Good, yes. CA has some pretty good schools but definitely not the best in the US.

Three top 10 engineering schools bolded.

Berkeley and USC have top 10 business programs.

UCSF and StanFUrd are top 10 med schools. UCLA is just shy of top 10.

Stanford and Berkeley have top 10 law programs.

UCLA, Berkeley, and Stanford have top 10 teaching programs.

The only region that comes close is MA.

Are you talking Public-only or Public and Private?

Public only: California by far.
P&P: It would be close.

Mass has MIT. CA has CalTech and Harvey Mudd. Mass has Harvard. CA has Berkley and Stanford. Mass has Brandeis, Wellesley, etc. CA has the whole Claremont-McKenna system.

I don't know enough about the Mass schools, but I will say that people will underestimate the CA schools because they're in CA. UC Irvine- one of the best public engineering schools in the nation. UC San Francisco- one of the best Med Schools in the nation. UC Davis- the best vet school in the country and a top medical campus as well. Cal Poly SLO- a solid ag and engineering school, though not top-notch. Pepperdine is pretty solid. USC has a highly regarded business program.

I'd say CA and Mass stack up pretty well. Mass may beat CA on top-of-the-list quality with MIT and Harvard but CA may beat Mass on quantity of high-grade schools.

I don't think your list makes much sense. Recognition is largely based on your area of knowledge and expertise. UC Davis is one of the top vet schools in the world, for instance. Cal Poly and UCSD are also recognized as top notch schools in certain disciplines. I've not often heard USC referenced as a top school, by contrast.

I get your overall point, just not sure how you came up with that list.

[edit] Oh, and California is necessarily going to have a LONGER list of top notch schools than any other state simply because CA has the population and space to support it. Take a slice of the northeast the same size as CA and total up the number of top schools; it would be a more fair comparison.

Get your crazy logic out of the Californians' dick waving thread!

Why? Because I'm Asian and our parents nailed it into our heads to get into the top programs. So some of my best friends have gone into business, medical, and engineering... some law too. As a result we each kinda know where the best schools are. That and I know my own school and it's rival pretty well. Yes it's sad. It's not like I can tell you the whole top 10 though... although I could probably start building the list somewhat for each category.

Hey now, I'm from California but I don't have a dick to wave! 😛

I would say we definitely have one of the best... but it certainly would depend on how you define best. Certainly by almost any metric CA would be competitive for higher education marks.

Not that we could really compare to the great state of "the northeast" 😀
