Does cable give you unlimited connections?

If i were to get cable internet, would it be like cable TV in that I can hook it up to however many computers I want? And do they need to use special cable lines, or does any line that would normally go to a TV work?

This is how it is at my place.. Cable->Cable modem->Router->X number of NICs. I am not sure about the second part of your question.

you can hook your cable modem to a router that shares your connection to other comps the router i have is the netgear rt314.. it's nice

Yes, you can technically connect as many PCs as you want. You would basically need a router/switch to split the line and keep the data flowing to the right PC.

You would connect a CAT5 Ethernet cable from the cable modem to the router. You would then connect each PC to the router with a CAT5 Ethernet cable. You wouldn't use coaxial cable...once the cable line reaches the cable modem, the data gets carried over Ethernet.

With Road Runner where I live, you get unlimited connections.

You don't need a router and instead can simply plug the line from your cable modem into a cheap hub, splitting it among your computers and giving each a unique IP address.

They don't charge extra, but in some parts of the country they will (which is why a router is usually a better idea)

or you can download a program to share the connection, like winproxy. I have 2 ethernet cards in my computer, one to take in the cable, and one to go out to a hub where my roommates are connected.
