Does being in the military give you credit?

Well I just recently bought a cell phone and you know how when you have no credit you have to put down like a 200 dollar deposit? I have no credit that I know of and I had to put down no deposit. Only thing I can think of is that I might have gained credit by being in the military or maybe my direct deposits? Can anyone answer this question for me? Also where do I go to find my credit rating?

Thanks,
Rob

Not in and of itself, but lenders get a warm squishy feeling from knowing if you miss a payment, they can just call your commander and get you in all sorts of trouble, and even potentially just get their money pulled from your check.

To get your credit report for free, apply for something. If you're turned down, you can just call an automated 800 number to get your free report.

http://www.freecreditreport.com

The website name is deceiving because you have to sign up for their credit monitoring service to get your "free" credit report. But you can cancel as soon as you get your report and you will not be charged anything. The report does NOT give you a credit score though.

A better option is to pay $12.95 to get a report from http://www.myfico.com because it will also include your FICO score.
