Does Beer really cause weight gain?

I hear people say all time that they have gained weight because of beer drinking.

I was just looking at Bud Light nutrionational facts:

12oz:

http://www.elook.org/nutrition/beverages/4209-2.html

7g of total carbs/109 calories.

Now compare that to coke:

http://www.thecoca-colacompany...ft_drink_nutrition.pdf

40g of total carbs/150 calories (note: these are rough conversions as the coke pdf only provides info for 8oz, not 12 oz.)

Compared to a common drink, it seems bud light is a much healthier alternative?

I usually have at least 1 coke a day...which has 4x the carbs of 1 budlight. On average, I probably have 6 beers a week or so.

it's a myth. some people actually lose weight when they start drinking. i thought my weight gain was from beer but i lost 50 lbs still drinking 10-12 beers a night just by cutting out other things like sweets, sodas and fried foods

what are you talking about? thats for 12oz, not 12 cans.

I don't know how big a fucking ounce is, where I live we have long discarded such archaic measurements.

Are you telling me that you find this confusing? Really seems second nature to me.

Well, you're not far off the mark. I know plenty of people who drink 12 beers in a night. I don't know many people, other that myself in another life, who could drink 12 sodas.

By the way 12 oz is .35L, so 12 beers is about 4.3L.

Edit: What software are you guys using to open SVG files?

Oh well that's what I was assuming when I made my original comment. What I'm getting at is that it's easy to down a dozen beers in a night (and therefore a shit ton of calories), but I'd be amazed to see someone do 12 Cokes. So yeah, drinking lots of beer will cause you to gain weight, but so will eating apples if you eat enough of them.

Thing is, people don't often include drinking a few beers when they do a rough estimate of caloric intake. So they eat the same as they have, and are now drinking on top of it. Of course they're going to gain weight this way. Is beer incredibly unhealthy when compared to other unhealthy things in the diet? Nah, not really.

so you just assume that it's 12 cans? That's retarded.

No, my post was misinterpreted. I assumed 12oz = 1 can, see above.

No, he was just being typical GodlessAstronomer in that reply. He already stated he assumed that was per can, just had to try to push his metric agenda. :p

and the fact that after a night out if you are hungry fast food seems like a good idea (burger/kebab/other), and the next day you will be tired and possibly hung over, thus will graze/crave sugary foods.

hmm, intriguing observation.

I, on the other hand, love me some beer. I weigh, hmm let me dig up xeemzor's diagram... a little over 12 stones. :D
I couldn't really tell you what that hell that meant without said chart. 170lbs in America. ;)

I used to drink maybe 4 or 5 cans of pop a day on average in high school. Got a nice belly on me but otherwise was still basically skinny, just a little misshaped for the weight at 180lbs for a 5'11" frame. Plus I was lazy.

A few beers a day, and a dozen on weekend nights, won't make you gain weight if you manage your diet and/or exercise regularly. If I didn't I could have easily gotten in trouble with weight, as whenever I drink a lot, it tends to be followed up by deliciously greasy food. :)
