Does ATI TV wonder support hardware mpeg encoding?

I just bought an ATI TV Wonder PCI. I'm just trying to figure out the best format to capture video. I am capturing from a Hi8 camcorder. On the box is says "capture mpeg-2 video from your camcorder". Does this mean it will hardware encode in MPEG-2? I have been able to capture with many different formats using MMC 7.5, just haven't found the best one yet. If I select "DVD" or "Good" quality setting, it is MPEG-1.
I have searched this forum and a few others to try to find the answer, but no luck. I hate to post something that someone else has already posted.
I would also like to edit the video using Virtual Dub or a similar program. Virtual Dub doesn't seem to work with MPEG-2.

This is what I am interested in doing:
1. Capturing Hi8 video in high quality
2. Compress and edit (In whichever order is better)
3. Copy to CD (About an hour of Video per CD)

I am using the PIII500 listed in My Rigs.

I appreciate any info or links to help.

Just to answer the title, no it doesn't support hardware encoding. It is software and that use your CPU power. 🙁
