They don't need to track it per se, they could just query the DB.

must be many GB huge.

the forum is the database
this thing you see/read/type is just a front end for a database
the messages/replies/posts are all just things in a database

The mods keep their own notes for that sort of thing in The Bat Cave. For this function to be integrated into the software, you can either ask the mods or admins to turn it on, or if it doesn't exist yet, file a feature request in The Suggestion Box or directly with Fusetalk.
