At the ASUS website, under specifications, for memory, it reads:

Non-ECC, Un-buffered memory only support for client OS (Windows7,Vista and XP) [emphasis on only is mine]

I have read in another site (New*gg), a buyer complaining that the board did not support ECC, although it was advertised to do so. ASUS responded:

"We sincerely apologize for the issues you are experiencing regarding ECC memory. We've corrected this issue in a BIOS update. Please visit our support site for this workstation motherboard at http://usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8B_WS/#download and download the latest BIOS, 0802.

Best Regards,

ASUS Motherboard Support"

Does anyone know if that BIOS update provides for ECC support under Windows, and has this been verified by other than ASUS?

There is a distinction between host and client operating systems. A server hosting a client work station may use:
Windows Server 2008 Enterprise 32/64-bit
Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 32/64-bit

ECC, Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory, no Registered Memory

Not all CPU's support ECC memory. Intel Core i5/i7 processors only support non-ECC memory.

Thanks for the reply DrTan.

As I have been looking around the web, I have come across
statements that the OS has nothing to do with ECC support,
that it is strictly a matter of hardware.

I have also come across statements that seem to state that
supporting ECC memory means that the memory will work, but the
ECC is not functionally supported, in other words, ECC DIMMs
would provide no more functionality than non-ECC DIMMs.

At the ASUS forum, the issue does not appear to be resolved.

The issue does not appear to be resolved.

I would like to run a Xeon E3-1270, in the P8B WS, with Windows 7 64-bit.

Will this setup utilize the error correcting functionality of ECC DIMMs?

Non-ECC memory support for client OS (Windows7)

ECC memory support for host OS (Windows 2003, Windows 2008, Windows 2008R2)

If you are using Windows 7, the ECC won't be functioning.

ECC functionality does not depend on OS support

possibly REPORTING of ECC errors doesn't work in Win7, but the actual correction will either happen or not independent of the OS

ECC functionality does not depend on OS support

The Asus specifications for this particular motherboard indicate, "Non-ECC, Un-buffered memory only support for client OS (Windows7,Vista and XP)".
