I am helping a friend build a computer, here is what his setup looks like:
Antec Sonata Black Case w/ 2 120mm fans.
SLK900 heatsink
variable 36-56cfm cpu fan for heatsink (92mm)
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Barton
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
ATI ALL IN WONDER 9600
Audigy2 sound card
1 GB Corsair XMS PC3200 Memory (2 512mb sticks running in dual channel)
TDK Dvd burner
Arctic Silver 3 Thermal Coupound used.

on idle it reports temps around 46 degrees. It is the stock revision bios (I don't know for now), but did you notice a change when you upgraded BIOS. Other than that, I can't figure out why it runs so HOT!! I put my hand on the heatsink and I can still touch it, on others its been so bad where I can't even touch it. So what's the problem?? Could it be Arctic Silver installation because I didn't read directions and just applied it straight onto the CPU? But it couldn't make THAT much of a difference. I was expecting around 35 temps idle. WTF?!?!?!

ok i give you bump back..

depends on the bios versions..

depends on the motherboard type/brands..

you will find some of the bios versions read CPU temp closer to the actual temp while the others are far off.

the best way is to use temp sensor probe and you put em on yurself.

if your system is totally stable in say.. prime95, don't complain.

Psst, try cleaning off the old paste and applying a new layer of thermal paste using half of what you used before. Your goal is a paper thin, if not thinner layer of paste, that's the secret to low temps!!!! When I built my first computer I used insane amounts of AS3, not enough to make it run all over the place but enough to tell that when the heatsink was removed there was too much. Now, I've replaced enough heatsinks to know that less is best, when it comes to thermal paste.

Will try AIDA32, BTW, can I use nail polish remover (acetone) to remove the old AS3. I think I put insane amounts like you said! LOL! Paper thin? I put a lot more! :(

When I had that board- it reported high till I flashed the bios to v1007. Then pretty accurate. Get Motherboard Monitor 5 and check temps there- pretty accurate- Anything above 40c is pretty high. Put on a good TIM like Arctic Silver- but put it on very thin to get the most out of the silver. Remember it takes about 150-200hrs of breakin time to lower temps. Mine is idle at 25c using a SLK-947U HS and Zalman fan. Also hard to make standard in temps because of different configurations and processors IE VIA vs Nvidia.
