In my experience I have only been able to get the discount online or in the school bookstore, but not the actual apple store

Hmmm, well when i go to educational discounts it brings up this...

Apple offers powerful desktop and portable computer solutions at special prices for students enrolled in or accepted to U.S. higher education institutions. Here?s how to find out more about student discounts:

Shop and compare prices online at the Apple Store for Education.
Visit your Campus Reseller.
Locate an Apple Store near you.
Call 1-800-MY-APPLE to speak to a Mac specialist.
Apple also offers a number of financing options for education customers.

If I'm not mistaken I think you can take your school ID and get it in store, right?

You are correct. However, if you order online, I don't think they even bother to verify that you are a student.

You can only get an educational discount on hardware in the retail store. To get a discount on software you need to get it through your schools comp store, or through apples online store.

Some schools offer different pricing in their on campus stores. My school sells 20GB iPods for 239$.

I've had no trouble using my student ID in Apple stores to purchase hardware. I've never used it in stores to buy any software. I did buy my Powerbook with the student developer program though.
