Does anyone who wears contacts have this problem too?

The thread about prescription sunglasses reminded me: whenever I have my contacts in and I'm watching TV or at the computer, my eyes start to feel like crap after only about 15 minutes. They get really dry and my eyes get red too. Rewetting drops help, but as soon as I go back to the computer/TV, they get dry again.

What can I do about it? Currently I just wear my glasses whenever I'm going to watch TV or be at the computer for a long time. Does this happen to anyone else?

That never happens to me. I can wear contacts all day and not have any problems, but if I sleep in them I'll feel like crap for an hour the next day (but then they'll get better)

no, but they do get dry and red after 10 plus hours.

My D.O. told me that it's best to wear them for < 8 hours a day. So I generally abide by that rule, but I hate how they feel when my eyes are stationary (computer/TV). UGH!

YES! this is a big problem for me. I think it might be because when you are watching a TV or reading on a comp screen, you forget to blink as much, and your eyes get dry quickly.

i dont know if there is an answer, but when they start to feel bad, I just stop and open/close my eyes really slowing. It stings, but it get a little better. It has sucked hard core since I started work- I should probably wear my glasses during the day. But then I don't feel as awake and I feel like I look a little frumpy. sigh.

I'm wearing my glasses now and I just tried that (blinking really slowly) and I could feel my eyes tear up. I think the problem is that my eyes dry out because I'm not blinking as much (like you said). Maybe I can make an effort to blink more when I'm at the computer from now on.

Thats a problem even if you don't wear contacts. Many people when they are on the computer or watching a tv/movie forget to blink, especially when playing games. You just have to make a conscious effort to blink. I try to take a long (1 sec) blink whenever I can and also look away from the computer screen every 5-10 minutes. In the winter the air is also much dryer usually. You can help by adding a humidifier to the room you are in. Just be careful cuz too much humidity is bad for electronics and other stuff.

Yeah, at LAN parties everybody I know has problems with not blinking. It really starts to get to your eyes if you don't do it enough... I just take breaks every half hour or so and do something else.

I don't have that problem when I'm at work, but when I get home and if I'm on the computer, they get dry and irritating real quick. I don't know why either, so I just take them out and go blind :)

I have a problem with contact lenses and dry eyes. The lense would dry out while it was on my eye causing the lense to deform and become a ineffective lense. There was nothing I could do about it. Doctor told me I just have uncommonly dry eyes. Using wetting drops provided temporary relief but having to use them all the time was completely impractical.

Have you talked with your eye doctor about this? It could be that your prescription is slightly off.

Staring at a screen, with lenses in your eyes, will make them dry out faster than someone without lenses in their eyes. I've had the gambit of contacts and glasses and this eye drying is especially bad in the winter months and more noticeable because of my use with computers. The best thing to try are the rewetting "tears". It worked well for me while I had lenses and has worked well for me after lasik.

you have to blink *fully*. Meaning you blink all the way and not *nearly*. The eye guy at the shop told me that I don't blink fully when I was getting contacts tested. Now I blink properly. I wear glasses mostly anyway, contacts for sport only.....

I have that problem too. My doctor says don't wear contacts when focusing on anything close. IE reading, staring at computer, staring at pr0n...

ANyway... He says for that, get a cheap pair of glasses to wear around the house, and take off the damn contacts when you don't really need to wear em.
