They offer $5 trades, as opposed to $10 on e-trade. How are they for a first time investor?

I always got the feeling they were for people who just wanted to put in, say, a couple hundred of bucks/month into some certain stocks. That way, over time, they slowly build up to a fair # of stocks in a few companies.

10 bucks on etrade if you make 27 trades per quarter. if your'e not going to make that many then it's gonna be more.

i personally use ameritrade and have been very satisfied with them.

I use Scottrade and am very happy. $7 dollar trades on listed stocks above a buck. Cant beat that. Sharebuilder always struck me as resembling my 401k, where I put in small amounts every month. I personally dont like doing that on a personal stock trading account. Just my preference really.

Thanks for advice. That's the conclusion I came to as well. Regarding scottrade, does it charge you any other fees outside of $7 per trade? Anything like monthly fees, inactivity fees, etc? Is there a minimum number or volume of trades you must have? Their web-site says no, but I'd like to hear that from their customer.
