I'm want to get a webcam and I have no idea where to start. The only webcam I really know of is the Logitech Pro 3000 (I think that's what it's called). What companies make the best webcams?

Edit: I know this should probably be in peripherals, but with only 800 posts there, I didn't think that section would give me much help.

I checked that site, and half of the time the site won't load, but thanks for trying. Anyone else know of any good webcams?

Orange Micro offers a USB 2.0 webcam. I have one ordered to replace my Zoom USB 1.0 model.

EDIT: There is someone on the For Sale forum that has the Intel Pro webcam for $45.00 shipped. Link

I have the IBM PC Camera and it sucks. The color sucks and framerates are terrible even at low resolutions. I can get about 10-12fps at like 174x135 (dont remeber the exact resolution).

Hmmm! I am on my 5th digital camera, but have bever seen any reason to even consider a web cam. Why would I want to take pictures of myself all the time? Seems sort of narcissistic. :)

I have the Logitech QuickCam Pro 3000 too, and it is VERY nice. I bought it because somebody was stealing my newspaper, and I was rather PO'ed. It was listed as having a secuirty camera feature, which works great. I mounted it in the window and left my computer on, and when somebody walked by, it would take a short video of them...so I got the thief on video-showed it to the manager of my apartment complex-and got them evicted. Haha. The only other thing I've used it for is taking still shots. It does cost $100 retail, though.

My office mate likes to keep a jar of candy (mini snickers, etc) on his desk for people to dig into during the day. Various people will come by and grab some... and buy candy for the jar once inawhile too.

Anyway, we have long suspected that some of the cleaning guys were putting a huge dent in the jar throughout the week. We put a Logitech 3000 on the case :). We set the camera up about 4 feet away partially burried by some books and papers. We set the camera on the motion detection and left for the night. The candy jar was left open (lid off). We had the camera dumping files on the company webserver so we could check in from home.

Sure enough, they were into the candy pretty good. All 3 of them (Father and 2 sons). Man was it funny.. just the way they acted when they grabbed some.

The next day, we of course shared our movies with the rest of the company.. everyone loved them.. lol. We decided to see just how far they would go to get some of the chocolate goodness. The next night, we left the lid on, but not screwed on. Sure enough, they did not have a problem living the lid and taking care to make sure it was put on the same way.

The third night, we sealed it up. Screwed the lid fully on. They didn't grab any..

It was amusing for the week or so we had it up.. watching them dig deep for the ones they liked.. lol

Webcams are good for a little amature security.

Not quite $100 on the cost. Buy.com has them for $68 and $79. The clearance one has 16bit color the other has 24bit color. Did not dig deep enough to see what the other changes are.

Cool. Very cool =) I've never even considered using any of my QC 3000's for surveillance. Might have to play around with that this weekend :)

Yeah, that's why I said "retail". And this was almost a year ago. After going to get the paper and not finding it there for the fourth time in a week, I got mad and drove down to Fry's and bought the most expensive webcam they had, paying the full retail price of $100. I'm sure there are plenty of places on-line that sell it for less.
