Does anyone use a stethoscope (or similar) to detect noise?

I've had this idea a while that it would be nice to have a stethoscope to help determine where (and how much) noise is coming from what component. I'm trying to quiet down my PC's, and a stethoscope would help me do that. I assume they are pretty expensive if you get them from a medical supply company. Does anyone have a take on this?

get a screwdriver and put the bit point on what you want to listen to and put your ear up to the handle. (that was actully taught in my CMT courses in college)

I think the screwdriver trick would pick up vibrational noises more than emitted noises. Though the two are related, some materials emit more vibrational noise than others.

You can probably get plastic stethoscopes at car parts places for pretty cheap.

The kind of stethoscope (conductive) they use in auto shops to locate noises would be excellent for locating strange noises in computers. I'll be looking for one this week.. Thanks for reminding me!

I believe that Kragen Auto Parts stores have a mechanics stethoscope for under $10. I'll be checking it out today. Walgreens (and probably other drug store chains) carries a stethoscope for around $10, at least they do online.
