does anyone use a program to boost the microphone?

i'm interested in a reference from someone that uses one. i see adverts for misc. programs, but none seemingly does just the basic concept of boosting my output -- they're mostly loaded with other stuff. any recommendtaions?

if you're using windows, there's one in volume controls under advanced for the input channel; I think they just call it "Mic Boost"

i don't see a "mic boost." just a "sterro mic" option.
