a dedicated PDA, like a palm pilot or tungsten or ipaq or whatever was hot back in the day.

i figure blackberries and iphones have pushed them out of the market by now.

I haven't seen a PDA in a long time; I bought a Tungsten TX a while ago, and sold it a few months later because I never used it.

My blackberry, or any decent smartphone for that matter, does everything and more that a PDA can do.

Actually, I don't even fully utilize my blackberry anymore ever since I got the Storm. I just make/receive calls, and check email. When I had the 8800, I used the calender and the task list religously.

Now, I have print-outs of the current month and I schedule things with that. I use a legal pad for my to-do list.

If I found the right PDA I would get one. The problem with BB or SmartPhone is the ridiculous $30-$50 per month additional data plan. What a crock of shit.

I know I see stores and sports venues using modified Palm Pilots all the time for bar code tracking.

Once technology advanced to a certain level, I went back to a notepad and pen. I haven't seen a dedicated PDA in the wild in quite some time.

Last one I used was the Nokia 770, and before that, the Dell Axim (had a couple of models going back to the original ones).

There's little reason to own a dedicated PDA anymore, as smartphones now are at the point where all the features that made dedicated PDAs superior (faster hardware, larger and higher resolution screens, more advanced OSes, room for many features) can all be found in current and fairly inexpensive (or contract subsidized) phones.

The only issue I see with cell phones right now is that multiple connections and high usage eat up too much battery quickly. Battery tech is still lagging behind the rapid pace of mobile processor development.

I'm sure a lot of people have iPod Touches, which are PDAs, but they don't think of it as a PDA.

I had a Palm IIIxe and a Dell Axim, but now I use a smartphone.

now if mp3 players will be integrated into the smartphones better. Why do people deal with carrying multiple devices? Is the audio that much worse on a smartphone? Do you really have THAT much music you listen to?

Some people have large collections and prefer to keep their entire collection on a portable player without having to keep syncing playlists.

Also, smartphones generally don't have much battery life, and if you listen to a couple hours of music a day, that will eat up a lot of juice.

I have a 3rd generation iPod Nano. It's small, compact, and does a great job of playing music. Plus, when I run or go to the gym, I only need to carry the tiny nano, and not my entire cell phone.
