Does anyone still use e-cards?

I sent an e-card once ever a while ago and I never even considered it again.

My family uses them a lot. I almost never give cards at all. I prefer eCards if anything for birthdays. Weddings require real cards. No one is going to save every birthday card they ever get but they might save a well-written wedding card. Overall I think the idea of cards is stupid and people should just go up to the person / call them up / email them and say what they think.

Anything that requires following a random link or opening an attachment just gets deleted for safety reasons, so no one in my family uses e-cards.

E-cards piss me off. My relatives send them to me and I just delete the email like I never got it. When they call up and ask if I got their card, I tell them that I didn't see anything the mail.

E-cards are like a slap in the face. They feel obligated to send you something, but they don't think you are worth a $2 card or the time to mail it.

I only send them to old people (mostly relatives) that send them to me. Maybe one or two a year. I figure they must like them if they send them out. If the only contact I had with them was e-cards, it would annoy me, but they're people that send me personal emails or I see or talk to on the phone regularly so it doesn't really bother me. Well, on second thought, I guess it bothers me a little bit because they know I'm on dialup and the cards take forever to load. Hmm.

I'd much rather my family spend $0 on a lame card than $2 for a lame card. At least then I don't feel guilty for trashing it instantly and don't think they are stupid for wasting money and time at a card store when they additionally call me up and say the same basic thing anyway. Plus that way I'm less obligated to write a thank you letter or place a thank you call to thank them for the lame $2 card written by someone else inevitably including religious statements I don't agree with or terrible humor. Never mind the occasional situation (has happened to me twice in my life) where someone you have feelings for signs their name with "Love" and then you spend a few hours mentally picturing whether it meant "Love" or "Love".

Anyway, as lame as eCards are, I like thinking of the flash artist who devoted time and effort to the card. It's much more satisfying than someone writing some stupid awful poetry that is no better than the poetry I could write in 30 seconds. Whoever gets paid to write that crap has got to be laughing their way to the bank.

I remember when eCards were all the rage in the 90's.

I haven't sent one in ages.
