Does anyone see competition to the R9 290x or 780ti soon?

At first I was all ready to get a "NEW" system X99 and DDR4 oh wow
now I just think well maybe.

will the Haswell-E and X99 be that much of an upgrade?
mainly gaming and goofing off.

If you are mainly gaming, then a GPU upgrade is the way to go. 2600K @ 4.5Ghz is plenty fast. Moving to X99 seems like a waste for you unless there was some game that truly took advantage of a 6-core CPU launching really soon. Otherwise, dual 870/880s or GM200s or some AMD equivalent GPU upgrade in 2015 is much better.

I'm not convinced the 880 will unseat the 780ti at 1440P/1600P/ 4K because of the lower memory bandwidth.
Even if the 780/780ti get discontinued, you will still have Titan Black at the top available until Titan II makes its debut, which means I doubt you will see 780ti drop below $599, and I doubt 780 will drop below $399, and there are already clearance rebates starting to flood the online retailers.
Just this past week, Ive seen MSI, Asus, Zotac, & Gigabyte 780ti's all in the 599-609 range, and the stock emptied out pretty quick.

Depending on the MFR $599 might be the time to buy a 780ti.
