i paid $375 ,i think, for a 3X cd reader and sound blaster 16 controller card. that was under a trade up program where i had to send in my "old" 8 bit sound blaster card to upgrade

that was about 1994 or 1995, i think it was just before windows 95 came out

I bought a kit with cd drive and sound card, was around $500.

my 1st burner was an HP that I got during the infamous Staples coupon days :D

Bought a 2x HP at Best Buy for $250. Maybe it was early 1999? I remember I had to decompress all my MP3s to WAVs before I started the burn. Always had to quit every program, too. It was maybe 20% coasters. Mostly when you tried to multi-task.

My dad and I made a special trip to "Computer City" to get an 8x cd READER when they came out. I think it was like $300 when it came out!

2x2x8 for around $350 in '96 or '97 I think. I'm trying to even remember the brand...started with an "R" and sounded really "Asian"...sort of like Ryobi...but that wasn't it.

Ran it on a P-133. Yikes. Hour long rips + another hour for the burn. Turned off all background aps, disabled screen savers, ect.

Pretty crazy how far things have progressed. Recently I was able to play Half Life 2 while burning a DVD. :p

I remember paying around that for a 2x READER for my 486sx and it came for a game or two. I can remember telling my wife that after I upgraded my 8088 with a 20MEG hard drive that I proably wouldn't need a new computer for at least 10 years.

I remember when the X would appear on the writing icon in Adaptec EZ CD creator. At $8 per disc it was enough to cry over. :Q

I was looking on newegg.com and saw blue ray drives for 600$ usd. One of the buyers had said " I was an early adopter of cd burners and dvd burners and I paid much more for that than I did this drive"

do you guys remember how much they were?

I remember when my aunt had one and I would get a list of songs and then make a cd. I used to be real excited -

i don't remember when they 1st came out but my 1st one was a 4x external. I got it from Staples i think. I think i got a really good deal on it because i was expecting to spend like $200+ on one and ended up spending $80! I don't know if it was a price mistake or what but I was shocked (and extremely happy). They were still retailing for over $200 when i sold it. I sold it for $100, lol.

ahh the memories. For me it something more along the lines of throwing my mouse at the monitor when multiple discs would fail in a row. Not only did it take like a half hour to burn them, but they cost like $6 a disc.

I got a screamin' deal on a 2x Philips drive in 1997... went out to a local place with a fellow FidoNet trader that had lots of stuff in bulk, and they had a stack of drives still in the retail boxes for $150 each, marked as-is. We got the drives home and neither of them worked... until I figured out that the test the included software ran defaulted to mode 2, and when I switched it back to mode 1 the drive worked perfectly. Woohoo!

I do also remember paying $1/disc for generic cheapo stuff at First Saturday in Dallas... those were the days... :p

My first CD-burner was a Plextor 4X SCSI burner. It only burned CD-Rs (NOT -RWs) and cost me around $400+(??). I don't believe that I ever had a coaster with it. It's sitting in a box in my attic and still works today. At least I think it does, although to be honest, I haven't bothered plugging a SCSI card into anything in 4-5 years.

EDIT: Don't remember when I got it. 1996 or 1997 maybe? Finally found the model number - PX-R412C. Plextor doesn't even list it among its archived drives anymore. I had to go into their "drive history" timeline to find it. :p

Yes, I remember how huge a deal that was...I could put the songs I wanted on a CD in the order I wanted...all for the price of a (then) $2 CD.

Ah, memories...
