Does anyone own a POS HP model 6635?

I cannot get a sound driver to work in this customers machine to save my life. HP has no sound driver on their site. The two I have found don't work. Well, everything shows fine in device manager, but if I try to play anything I just get an error that my "Sound device is fubared".

I did find one driver that everyone said is supposed to work. It's called the Congac driver of all things, but no dice.

Anyone else have this problem before?

Windows 98se BTW.

Thanks.

If the motherboard is a "Cognac" (it'd be printed right at the bottom front edge of the MB, near the front panel connector, in roughly 3 millimeter tall white letters. Popular in older HP's, it's based off the Intel 810 chipset. It appears to use an Intel based AC97 chip for the sound. Search Intel's site for drivers.

It could just be that Windows is buggered up too, I've had the same problem, with known working drivers, and the only thing I could do was reinstall windows. It said the drivers were installed correctly in device manager, but under "Sound & Multimedia" it wouldn't allow me to pick any sound devices (boxes grayed out).

Edit: The audio chip should be near the back bottom of the board, probably behind the 2nd and 3rd PCI slots. Whatever it says on the chip (IE: ADI 1885 or something along those lines), google that, and you should get the correct drivers.
