Summer is practically here and I have to choose between a new computer or take up surfing. I basically know nothing about surfing and want to learn as much as possible about the necessary equipment, what to buy/avoid, where to buy/avoid, and whatever it is I need to get started. Would appreciate it if any surfers here have any advice to leave :)

Also if anyone can direct me to a forum where I can get more thorough answers, that would also be appreciated.

I surf up here in the Pacific Northwest... I would definately take up surfing rather than spend more time on the computer...

Get a nice longboard, a wetsuit (if you need one) and have fun cruising around on little waves... Being in the ocean is such a great way to spend time...

Of course, you might want to take a few lessons at first if you don't have anyone to show you what to do... Once you get the basics down, then you can have a great time on your own...

I did until I moved here to Colorado. :(

I agree with the longboard. Actually at most shops you can rent soft longboards so you don't kill anybody (including yourself) while learning. Plus you don't have to invest $600+ on a "nice" longboard to get a feel for surfing.

Do it. I was going every morning before work for a while.

Seriously, about the forum thing. Learn to search on your own. Nobody likes a lazy ass.

Of course I could manually search for a forum which is what I have been doing, but for example, I do a lot of reading on computer and the latest in technology, but I would have never found a quality site like anandtech if someone hadn't directed me here.
