Does anyone not play MMO's because they don't have the time?

I stop in some MMOs periodically. I'll probably check out EQ2 when the next expansion arrives this November, depends what my schedule is.

For me an MMO is only fun if your at the top or close to it, which means getting great gear and getting into a great guild and then raiding 6-7 nights a week. Unfortunately I did that for a long time and eventually quit and sold my account on ebay, and promised myself I'd never touch an MMO again. 150 days played down the drain, and that was in WoW well before TBC came out.

It's not just the time that it takes from you, it also becomes the centre of your thoughts and somewhat of an obsession and an addiction, at least for me I found. Even Diablo 2 which I find addictive as crack has nothing on WoW (and likely other mmos).

I wouldn't play MMOs even if I had the time. Most MMOs I've seen are designed around grinding and gameplay that is designed to be time consuming rather than fun, and I don't like the whole subscription-based system either.

Don't know about others but eve is not that way. When I started playing it only took me a couple days to create a unique style of gameplay where I could steal from much higher level individuals and they couldn't catch me.
It was actually very gratifying because I believed as you do.
Eve however is truly unique from all other games I have ever played and nothing else I've seen has this level of openness.
It really is like being in a true world. You can play for years and not learn everything there is to know.

I don't by the whole "not worth the money" argument, its $14 a month, people blow that on one fast food splurge. $14 a month is a bargain for entertainment.

I agree, when I was addicted to WOW, my spending on PC games dropped significantly, this is including the $14/month fee. Instead of buying 2-3 games per month, I only played WOW.

Why I don't play MMOs:

Too much time, too much grinding, and in a guild means you have to be able to synch up your free time with others.

With single-player games I can fit them in to little gaps in my schedule, like before or after watching a DVD / blu-ray. I can play them on the spur of the moment, not needing to wait for the 3 hour raid scheduled for Tuesday at 7 PM.

If Bioware pulls off a good KOTOR MMO I may need to rethink this position though :)

Bingo.

Played WoW since beta, went through 4 different accounts because I quit/sold/started over. I've finally decided to keep my current account and stop playing until expansion...

To me its no fun if you're not the best or competitive (2k+ pvp, or t6 raiding).
