Does anyone like te look of the new Z4?

I've been looking at the new Z4 and every critical review is parising it over the over one's looks, but am I the only person that thinks the design is too busy?

There are no ricey lip spoilers and vents, but FFS, theres like 5 million dips, bumps, crevices, creases and bends everywhere. It's like someone designed a car, was done with it and then spent about 10 hours more adding in way to much detail.

The front especially looks disjointed, as if it was design by committee, theres just lines going every which way, ending abruptly.

I think it's quite a downgrade in the looks department from the previous Z4, and it seems to be more of a cruiser grandpa-mobile than the previous.

its ugly and heavy (it freaking weighs as much as a 3 series) and ridiculously expensive for what you get. this is no z4, it should be a z6 or something. i think it now competes much more closely with the SLK - ie not a fun car to drive.

with that in mind I traded in my old z4 for a boxster this past weekend. which i btw got new for less than the base price of the 3.0i 09 Z4 with no options, first digit isn't even the same.

Looks... it's definitely better than the old one. The rear of the new one is great, just like the 6. The front... not so much. I wouldn't say no though. The interior is infinitely better too. Maybe in 20 years when it's just me and my wife...

It's like a woman. You can look at her or her picture, and gripe about little issues, but you wouldn't kick her out of bed. Same thing applies. You can bitch about the looks all you want, but if you got a chance to take it for a spin, who here is going to hand the keys back and say "no thanks, that grille sucks"?

Truthfully, I'm not sure where a BMW Z4 fits into the car world anymore. The base price of a 30i is ~$900 less than the base of a Boxster and a 35i costs $5000 less than the boxster but I think anyone would agree, the Boxster S is $5000 better.

For badge snobs, they'd obviously go Porsche.
For performance/driving enthusiasts, they'd go Porsche.
For luxury/quality/interiors... Porsche

What niche does a Z4 fill again? a 3480lb hardtop coupe convertible with fussy styling and questionable value.

The 6 series are the ugliest BMWs in recent memory. Droopy sad front headlight face, humongous bangle butt...

Convertibles are fashion accessories and fun toys, more like a model or stripper, you're only dating them because of their looks and their "fun", in that case, a butterface can determine whether you'd be willing to commit to something a little more long term.

Eh. I think the Z4 has grown to be more than the original "Z3" concept. It's big, expensive, and now pretty feminine looking. But 'grats to the two German chicks who designed it.

It's definitely moved into a different segment - now it's a big, heavy GT car that looks nice (IMO) but isn't great to drive - kind of like the Z8, curiously enough. I actually like the looks of the new car and don't agree it's especially feminine, but it's too bad it's SO swanky and pricey. I guess there's the 1-series convertible if you want something more akin to the original Z3 (notwithstanding the fact that the 1-series is a bit of an ugly duckling IMO). At the end of the day I'd definitely take an E93 over this car.

I definitely don't mind the bangle butt... did you see the F1 and the Habib influence? Not a fan.

better than the E85 Z4, the new E89 has a pretty nice interior but those cars IMO aren't even in the same class. it's more of a GT vs Roadster

Audi interiors though...

PS
old
new 🙂

No, the 997 interior (and the Boxster 987 which shares the same layout) have very nice interiors. The 996/986 wasn't nearly as nice and the 993/964 and before were much less luxury, but the 997/987 has a very, very nice interior, especially after the mid gen refresh.

If you're talking about build quality, modern porsches win hands down over modern BMWs.

I have to disagree.

Yep, definitely not a real roadster anymore.

BMW needs a Z1 for those of us who like a real roadster.

The Z1 is a pretty cool little car.
