Does anyone know where I can find out what IE is using, if it's byte/sec or bits/sec?

When I got DSL, I noticed crappy download speeds of 40-90kbps downlaoding from fileshack's 250kbps capped servers. I know that I've gotten killer speeds with cable, but I just can't seem to get any higher with this DSL 3Mbps connection.

The reason why I think it's IE is because I download at a pretty consitant 1Mbps on steam when downloading HL2 or CS:S. How strange is that?

Anyone got any clue?

HTTP isn't the best transfer protocol for sustained speeds. IE can be a limiting factor, but it likely has more to do with the servers you're downloading from anyways. I don't think fileshack can "guarantee' that kind of bandwidth over HTTP anyways...

I hope you meant 40-90KB/s (kilobytes) and not kb/s (kilobits)...

I don't know, but it took me about 4 hours to download the FEAR demo so. But see, It's impossible for it to be KBps, although IE does show it as KB, but that could be a mistake, becuase that would mean that I was downloading at 720kbps and the cap is 250kbps.

But wait, Fileshack only says 250k/s. They don't say wether it's byte or bit.

Does anyone know where I can find out what IE is using, if it's byte/sec or bits/sec?

Are you sure you're pushing 3000 mbps? Log into your modem (check your dsl modem for the ip), and it should tell you your speeds. Then, go to DSLreports.com and under the tools section there is a speed test that's pretty acurate.

My speed is, according to DSLreports:

347kbps/688kbps

This seems very strange for my upload to be twice as big as my download. The connection is supposed to be at 3Mbps/768kbps. I know for sure that my modem is connected to the building at the advertised speed.

To me, downloading at 347kbps is great, but it's not the best. I've experienced better, what do you think?

Yea, something isnt right. This might sound like a dumb question, but you wernt downloading anything while you were testing where you? When was the last time you did a virus scan?

BTW, downloading at 43K second isnt "great" (the 347 you're getting) or even acceptable if you're suppose to be getting 375K (3000mbps).

You might ahve to call your local telco....

I got a response from Fileshack: The cap is 250 kBytes/s.

I was not downloading anything while testing.
I virus scanned and nothing was found.

I called Verizon and they told me to switch to the CAT5 cable, so now I'm using that. My download is still crappy at about 300k, but my upload got past 700 for the first time.

Then I tried to download from Fileshack and I got a constant 113kBps which is new for me. I'm gonna bother Verizon again later to see if I can squeeze more out of the download.

Kb/s = bits
KB/s = bytes

IE and Firefox bot use KB/s and they are accurate for me
