Does anyone know of any websites that help 13 year olds with math?

I have a 13 year old neice that is struggling in math. Do you happen to know of any websites or software that you RECOMMEND to help teach/assist in math?

What kind of Math? Basic alebra, trigonometry? The differences between schools and what 13 year olds are learning these days is quite vast.

Perfectly good question. I really don't know. I think they are relatively satisifed with her math skills since she seems to do very well in every other subject.

I don't think they realize how important is to nail math skills down.

I don't have a site to reccomend, but I'll say this- make sure she gets up to speed. I really screwed up my life by screwing around during the lower levels of math, and now it's haunting me. I wanted to be an engineer for most of my childhood and adolescent years, now I can't because I have close to zero math skill.

Thank you very much PhasmatisNox for the insight. I truly believe that a person can't fall behind because it would be nearly impossible to catch up.

Terrific from what I have seen and heard from teacher friends and a cousin that attended. His parents were very pleased with his progress and have continued to keep him there for many years now! He is some severe learning problems centered around reading....

Terrific from what I have seen and heard from teacher friends and a cousin that attended. His parents were very pleased with his progress and have continued to keep him there for many years now! He is some severe learning problems centered around reading....

I have read other positive opinions of Sylvan. Then I started asking about costs and it was approx. $50/hr. The other part that concerned me is that Sylvan wants a contract for a minimum amount of hours (quite often $8k - $10k).

But it's hard to put a price on education.

We've had 2 students at our school go to Sylvan Learning Center... neither student showed much improvement... (not worth the money, imho)

edit: I recall one of the students failed the state exam - (not my student) The math teacher at my school typically has around a 90% passing rate for students on the state exam - so that places the student in the lower 10%, despite Sylvan help...

While I don't think this comments on Sylvan as a whole, they're definitely not miracle workers. Student effort and ability are probably more important.

I know 2 kids that go to sylvan. Both of them have excelled since going with them. They are expensive, but you dont put a price on education. And if the kid is dedicated to wanting to learn it should be a great help.

Whats wrong with her textbook? I doubt any one web site is going to be a better general reference.

Does her school have a peer tutoring organization? Doesn't get better than one on one free help from someone taking the same course.

I always hear

But it's too hard..I'm not smart enough

and such.....I always ALWAYS emphasize the fact that most of mathematics is plain hard work(to an extent of course ). Understanding concepts is one thing, for which many come for help, but I tell them that hard work is more important than a baseline degree of intelligence.

Yeah, Hispanics are really smart, especially Colombians. I remember last year we had all this Hispanic girl help everyone in the tutor lab, however, we also had this Asian girl prove the professor wrong

Have you gone to school recently? I've been out of HS for ~4 years now, but the books sucked for everything. The college books have mostly been OK. The only really great math teacher I had got the stuff she used on us from a book that was yellow and falling apart.
