Does anyone know of a way to setup folding on computers with limited access?

Disclaimer: I have permission to set up folding on around 30 or so school computers.

The thing is, I am only allowed to do it as long as it does not take the admin's precious time, thus I cannot get the admin accounts on. Is there a way to run the one click install on pcs that wont let you run executables?

Please understand, I am well aware of how to set up folding on a regular non limited pc. I have my flash drive with me and have the one click install setup for single core and another for dual core, with the teams and everything already setup for it. If you have not heard of it, I will explain. It is an exe program that I simply double click, and it sets up folding on that particular pc with all the correct settings and username and team.

I asked my admin to be allowed to run Folding on his pcs, and he said sure, but to do it on my own time. This means that I need to find a way to setup folding on pcs that do not let you right click on the desktop, do not let you run any executables(other than ones already installed).

Does the link you gave explain how to do this? Pretty much, I am looking for a work around to get past the limitations setup on the user accounts without going into the admin account.

Just a guess but try making a shortcut in the Startup folder. Maybe you can trick it into thinking its running the program and not you.

Can you get to the c:\documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder through Windows Explorer? If you can, you can just paste your shortcut there.

I'm no expert 🙂

If the admin was serious about letting you run F@H, he KNOWS he will have to give you access to add F@H to the list of permitted programs or do it himself.

If the computers are locked down as tight as you say, there is no way (short of some kind of hack) that you will run F@H without some help from him.

If he was not just jerking your chain, he will add F@H to the list of accepted programs.

Good luck and welcome to the F@H TeAm 😀

Indeed, what GLeeM said. If these PCs are that restrictive, I couldn't think of a way to get F@H to work.

Hopefully the Admin will help you this one.

🙂

It is just that the admin is always very busy, and thus he has no time to go and set all that up any time soon. I was just looking for a way to set it up so I would not have to bother him at every single pc.

Just an idea: Can't he deploy the executable to all PCs via a network (or these PCs without LAN?) and then set permission for the exe to run?

I haven't had the pleasure of putting F@H on more than one PC at a time. But I can say to make sure you're using the -local flag so F@H doesn't try to write to the registry, Windows won't let that one happen 😛.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure you'll have to run the CLI version, which uses a registry entry to startup as a service. I think you may have to get access to the admin account or get a temporary admin account to get it installed.

Maybe you could try getting into a admin account by running the comp in Safe Mode. WinXP Home lets you get into a safe mode admin account without a password. With WinXP Pro, I think you're out of luck.
