Does anyone know if fishing at Big Bear Lake (in California) require a fishing license?

I've never been there and would like to know ahead of time :) Any fishing tips for that particular lake would be greatly appreciated as well!

According to the CA Dept of Fish & Game, if you're taking the fish, you have to have a license.
Correction: A license is required to wet a line at all, regardless of whether you catch or keep anything.

The fines can be very expensive.

And the ocean too. :(

Fishing licenses are good things.

Explain why having to pay for nature is a good thing.

The demands of game fishing greatly exceed the availability and reproductive ability of fish. Thus, in most all locations in the US where fish may be taken, some level of "stocking" is required. Fishing licenses help pay for this activity. They also help pay to monitor and maintain the health of lakes, rivers, streams, and the surrounding land.

As rgwalt said, in order to maintain healthy populations of local fish species, seasons and limits must be established. These must be enforced by someone (Wildlife & Fisheries or similar entity). These entities must have these regulations and documentation (licenses) and money (license fees) to operate. If you think fishing license fees are lining the pockets of some evil RRR FLL PNAC Republican, well, you're even crazier than I thought you were.

Anyways, most US states' license fees are a pittance. I wish more states would adopt stricter, more expensive, and specific licenses, like Canadian provinces and step up enforcement. Unfortunately, you couldn't get much lower on most states' (and the fed governement) totem poles than W&F.
