anyway there is no reason to not have AA/AF enabled.

for many yeah there is a good reason...FPS
your like me, you've had high end graphics cards for too long but even my old 6800gt would struggle with AA/AF on in some games such as fear or oblivion

Does FPS really matter that much when you are playing single player? I just finished COD2 and was playing at 1920x1200 full AA and Af, plus everything else maxed on a single 1900XT. My FPS would dip down to 16 and it really did not bother me at all.

Now if it were in multiplayer that would be a different story, but for a single player game like Oblivion, does it really matter?

16 FPS would drive me nuts . . . yes, it matters

. . . for me
[Oblivion 'tolerates' FPS below 30 but not much lower than that] . . .

15 FPS looks somewhat like a slideshow

edit - [when you say 'drops to' - if you mean for "an instant" . . . generally 'no prob'] ;)

Yeah, just for an instant. Mainly when it was raining and smokey and there was a lot of gunfire and bodies flying around. Generally I was over 50 FPS, but even 30 FPS over a short period of time did not bother me at all.

I have not played Oblivion yet (trying to find a used copy because I refuse to pay $65 Canadian for it) but I assume the pace of the game allows for around 30 FPS to not be a problem. I have a feeling I will not be able to play at native res though :(

30 FPS [continuous minumum] is generally 'fine' for SP FPS - for me.

Oblivion is "worth" $65 CDN . . . i got over 1,000 hours out of it. ;)
:Q
i'd NEVER sell my copy . . . waiting for the expansion.

and if you turn DOWN the Grass and Self Shadows, you will be able to run everything else at Max at your res.

That's a lot of hours!!

I've seen some copies selling in FS/FT for around $30 so I am going to try and grab one of those next time they show up (if they ever do) :frown:

Good to know on the settings, but does turning down the grass and shadows change the experience a lot, or is it like the soft shadows thing in FEAR, where the performance hit outweighs any visual benefit?

Turning down Soft Shadows is just like in FEAR . . . little difference for a lotta lost HP

"Grass" is not in most games [Gun, etc.] so i didn't miss it at all BUT it sure looks 'nice' with it.

Unless you are X-fire or SLI, Grass set to Max will cripple any other system . . . there is also a way to edit the ini files so that the grass is much shorter . . . 'things' get "lost" in tall grass. :p

i am really looking forward to firing up Oblivion['s xpack] next year with my new g88 or r680 to see what i am missing on my x850xt.

Great stuff, thanks for the tips.

I know what you mean about seeing what you are missing. I played HL2 on my old laptop for a while until I built my new rig and the difference was like night and day.

But I know how you feel about the Source engine, so no need to comment :p

Good luck trying to use it.

I'm running a dual-GPU 7950gx2 video card with a gig of video ram....and will consider myself lucky if I pull off a constant 30fps when that thing ships.

I doubt that they'd make Crysis so demanding. The % of people that own high end video cards is less than 5% of the total PC market, and thats an optimistic figure. Most people own FX5200, Radeon X300s and X1300s, if they have any sort of discrete card at all. Intel chips more graphics 'cards' than ATI and Nvidia combined. :(

yea well their previous game far cry scaled pretty well. so crysis might be playable on some lower end stuff. intel extreme graphics excluded ofcourse;)

I played FEAR maxed out then lowest graphics, it doesn't even seem like the same game.

I hear you. I realize now that graphics have a greater impact on whether I enjoy a game or not than I orginally thought.

I always used to say graphics were irrelevant, gameplay was all that mattered, but now I know decent graphics actually enhances gameplay for me.

Seriously . . .

. . . Source is a GREAT Engine! It "looks" great and runs well on mid-range rigs . . .

[disclaimer:] --just not as 'capable' as the other modern engines
i.e. it 'lacks' their shadows and lighting

And i played FarCry 1st on my 8500 [the demo - gag!] . . . 9800xt thru the entire game when it bacame bargain bin and finally on my x850xt [with all the bells and whistles] just to 'see'.

i know i will never play Oblivion again . . . unless there is an unbelievable mod . . . i am really looking forward to the x-pack . . . and it's tough to resist the "call of conroe" . . . i just got a NEW credit card yesterday PLUS my old one raised my limit $2000 TODAY --just to frustrate me. :p

:D

I feel your pain. Sometimes I think I hear actually saying "buy more stuff", maybe I'm just crazy. :p

I'm pretty happy though as I just bought a copy of Oblivion for $25!! Now I just have to wait until it gets here :frown:
