I want to make silk dupioni pillows like this
rectangular striped one in this picture. I have a sewing machine, but I haven't sewn since I was literally 5. So, anyone know how to make the edges?

Thanks,
MF

why?

I know it involves thread, and a needle, and occasionally scissors.... does that help?

/knowing how to sew and knowing how to sew well are two different things. I can work a sewing machine from my mad sk1ll5 obtained in Home-ec, but couldn't make that...

//I believe you should ask Ohtwell, who is apparently ATOT's 'Stepford Wife'. 😛

to add accents to the bed sheets I have - my pattern - I think it was called Wildflower by Calvin Klein is now discontinued, so I don't think I can buy them anywhere...also I like lots of pillows on the bed....We already have six pillows fromt the set, but I thought two small rectangular ones would be nice!

I just bought my wife a book called "Trading Spaces: Colour" that actually contains an article on making pillows easily with minimal sewing ability. I can check it out when I get home from work and see if it will help you out.

I'm just talking out my ass here, but can't you just sew the normal seam for the pillow (that is, cut 2 pieces of fabric to shape, lay them inside out and stitch them together, leaving a hole for stuffing) and then just sew another line around that (again leave a hole for stuffing parallel to the first hole) to make the "border"?

Stuff and stitch it up. Maybe put a little batting in the border part to give it some shape.

I can sew in a crude fashion, yes. Adding accents to bed sheets is not only beyond my skill, I have no idea what it even is.

I mostly just fix buttons and repair holes in the armpits of shirts.

That's basically it! 🙂

Basically you sew it together inside out then flip it around right and stuff it. Just have to lay everything out in reverse since it'll be on the inside.

Sewing is just like building cabinets or any kind of 'making stuff' skill.

Just get a book from the library on how to do it, find a pattern you like, and then follow the instructions. Practice a couple of times with cheap material to hone your l33t 5k1llz. Make any improvements or changes to the pattern that you'd like, and try them out on the cheap material first.

The nice thing about sewing is that if you screw something up, you can just rip out the thread and do it again. No one will ever know. Just make sure that you cut the pieces right. (Measure twice, cut once)
