does anyone know how to keep an AIM screen name?

i have a friend who is getting rid of AOL...but he wants to keep his screen name for AIM. is this possible or will canceling AOL force him to give up his old screen name? TIA

i cancelled my aol account last summer. they wanted $3 a month to keep my screenname. I told them to shove it. AOL sucks

hmm....I had aol forever ago, and also signed up with the same screenname with AIM at the same time.

I cancelled aol, but kept the screenname for aim. I didn't do anything.

i'd just cancel and try the s/n with aim...i've never had an aol account, but i've used the same aim s/n for about 4 years..
