Does anyone know how to keep a new puppy from crying all night long or whenever we leave?

Just got a new 9 week old Yellow Lab today, her name is Ashes. She has been crying all day whenever we leave her and has been frantically trying to find a way out of my "escape proof" back yard (which isn't as escape proof as I thought). Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Try to be patient. Ashes is a bit scared since she's new to your home and away from her mom. Sometimes putting a clock (the tic toc sound is supposed to soothe) near a pupply helps. Also, put something on her bed with your smell on it, a tee-shirt perhaps. Add a toy or two in the mix for distraction, maybe one that squeaks and one rawhide to chew on.

Puppies just do that.
They probably think you are abandoning them. Just don't let them loose in the house when you leave.

As for keeping them quiet, two words:
Duct Tape.

JK 😛

When my mom took care of my grandma's dog, she gave him a benadryl. :Q

I really hope you were not serious. She probably gave you gin when you cried at night as a baby too...

Azraele is right on the mark - I've got a friend who did the same with a pup she just got for X-mas - it seems to work out well for them....

How long is "all day" ?

leave barking/crying dogs outside all day long and the people next door will be getting out the slingshot and ice cubes

Does the dog have a kennel/cage? it sounds mean but most dogs like the safety/den aspects to it, and it keeps the pup out of trouble

So you wanna stop the puppy from crying, HUH? We'll get a plastic bag and......

*Eyes rolling towards the back of my head*

Yeah, that, or ship her over to a Korean restaurant

Well, our puppy (pitbull/boxer mix) is only 6 month old and he is very quiet. He rarely barks even in the presence of other dogs. He does like to chew on my girlfriend's expensive shoes though......

Our pup used to make a lot of noise at night also. One thing: do NOT under any circumstances continue to respond to the crying. You only encourage the behavior ("Hey, if I cry, they come see me! Great!"). Our dog's trainer (we took her to an obedience class -- HIGHLY recommended if you can find a good one) told everyone to let the dog sleep in your bedroom, even if you crate her up at night. Dogs want to be around their owners. We used to gate her up with baby gates in the living room when she was younger, but she now sleeps in her crate next to our bed and is quite content to do so.

May patience be with you. 🙂

You just jinxed yourself. I used to say that about our dog, and now she barks whenever she wants to go outside. Hard to ignore her when she's hurting your eardrums. :Q

lol, that was my first thought when i read the title. 🙂

I agree with Azraele, especially on the part about putting a t-shirt or something with your scent on it with the dog. We did that with a puppy we had and it seemed to make her feel a lot better. It wasn't too good for the pillowcase we used though. 🙂

<< Why would you name a YELLOW dog ASHES? If it was a black lab, yeah, but yellow? >>

Her mom was a black lab and dad was yellow, so Ashes is yellow with with a few small black patches on her back. Ashes fits her perfectly.
