hi everyone,

I was wondering if someone could give me a quick rundown on how to install a network card in a Win3.x machine. I don't remember much from my 486 days, since I was just a wee lass when I had win3.x on my machine. Any advice on how to install the card and configure the settings would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Very carefully :D ,

Ideally what you would want is Windows 3.11 (Windows for Workgroups). Before then windows had no built in network support (correct me if I am wrong). Anyway, if I remember correctly, you use the dos network drivers, intializing from autoexec.bat and config.sys. The card should come with some dos drivers but it will be a pain to set up. I will try to find some info for ya on it.

any info you find would be a great asset. I'm trying to help a friend who can't really afford to upgrade his computer. I'm trying to get him hooked up for his dorm connection, but I have no idea what i'm doing. Thanks again for any help you guys can offer.

As I recall, it's not too hard to do, Win 3.11 walks you through it more or less, especially if you have a common NIC like 3com 3c5x9 or NE2000/clone. It's probably about as hard as getting a soundcard to work with Win 3.x.

I'll be setting one up like that this weekend......for the first time in I don't know how many years.
