does anyone know how to get the stinking heatsink off a Leadtek 6800GT?

When I wanted to remove the heatsink off my old GeForce 256, I stuck it in the freezer for a day and then I pried it off with a screw driver. I thought newer video cards have heatsinks held on with those little pins?

yes i know, but i need answers NOW not next week

If people would post in the right forum more often, you'd get answers faster.

As far as to the topic at hand, dunno. Never played with one.

Is it really worth taking it off if you're breaking resistors off? Congrats, you voided your warranty.

think its out of warrenty anyhow

most video cards have 3 year warranties...

I just got a new 9800 not more than two months ago

meh if it breaks it breaks, i wont be gaming for about a year PLUS when i go back to uni. havent got time to play games, and then ive got a year out to do so wont be doing much then either.

heh it appears leadtek have no warranty, i looked on their site, and on a few retailers and non of them mention warranty at all, theyre not listed in the support list at the site where i bought the card either.

the site claims simply that there is no warranty and that all products are used at the owners risk

cheers muse, but the leadtek HSF is rather abit more complicated than that
I have the BFG 6600 GT OC, and it has lifetime warranty to the original purchaser, which I'm not. I bought mine virtually (but not actually) new off eBay. Anyway, when you remove the HS, you void the warranty, I do believe. I had the BFG ti4200 and RMA'd it twice because the fan died and BFG sent me a new one both times. The second time, in fact, they sent me a ti4600 in its place!

I figured I'd want to replace the 6600's HSF because of noise issues but when the card came I was delighted that the HSF was virtually impossible to hear over the sounds of my box, which has pretty quiet stuff in it (Seagate barracudas, Vantec Stealth 80 mm on CPU, Antec True430 controlled case fan. So, I won't be removing the HSF, at least not until it craps out. If my past experience is any indication, that will happen in the not too distant future. So, Otisunkmeyer, what's the deal with the HSF on your card? Why is it a bitch to remove? I figure I'll have to remove mine soon enough.

Maybe BFG will be cool enough to not nail me for not being the original buyer if and when my 6600 GT OC fan dies. It wouldn't surprise me. When I've called them, their CS people have been very very helpful, by and large, and pretty cool.

Edit: BTW, Nik is right, you should really have posted this in the Video forum.

Dude, it's not that hard really. There's like 4 funky screws to take off on one side of the card. I don't remember how exactly I did it, but I did it more than 6 months ago. If you just look at it long enough it should come to you.

If you really need the help, I'll pop open my case and pop the card, and point at what needs to be done to remove it. I'm at school now though, and am probably not going to get home for another 5 hours+.

If you already broke a resistor off, you are best to just give up this little projector right now and not worry about it. You are not capable of this type of thing without damaging your card.
