class, this is a grade A trollthread! let's look at some of the defining features:


1. polarizing and controversial topic - check!
- this will draw the masses in.

2. asking for input - check!
- this will cause the masses to reply to your thread.
- a troll thread can't possibly work if nobody's responding!

3. blunt and dismissive demeanor - check!
- this is tricky to achieve in a convincing way, but necessary to ensure maximum trolldom.
- the key is to take all that input you asked for, and negate it. question it, dismiss it, reject it, belittle it, even trash it if you want to have some fun! this will make everyone angry, and that's the point of a trollthread, isn't it?
- you may need to ramp up your bluntness over time to keep the thread going. this requires some experimentation in just how fast to turn up the dial. you can't just start off turned up to 11.
- if you can't find a way to negate a point, your only choice is to ignore it. OP has wisely done this with several responses that would be difficult to handle.

4. plausible premise - check!
- your thread has to match your persona. to thine own self be true, amirite?
- this gets harder the longer you post in a forum. consider creating new accounts occasionally to start fresh.
- if you step too far outside the boundaries of your persona, your thread will be dismissed as a troll thread, and people will stop contributing.
- you can't let that happen! you mustn't!

5. flexible ambiguity - check!
- ambiguity allows you to change your so-called "position" so that you can disagree with everyone simultaneously.
- ambiguity is the best weapon of a master class troll!
- with enough practice, you will be able to disagree with people who disagree with each other.


next week's assignment is to read through this thread all the way to the painful, brilliant end, and then write an essay about the OP thread response that you feel was the most trolliest.

oh, and you can get 5 bonus points if you correctly guess whether or not it will eventually get locked.

I've already told you why it's selfish. Not everyone believes in the same things you do.
There are exceptions to every rule because life isn't a one-dimensional series of coin tosses.
