The actions themselves are arbitrary and irrelevant. .

No- they really are not arbitrary or irrelevant. I can forgive someone who backs in to my car way way easier than someone who kills someone w/ a hammer- how can you say the actions are arbitrary? Should child rapist be forgiven then? If they "change" their lives, would you let your children be around them? Why not? The actions are irrelevant.

Well unless you run for political office you might be able to not bring it up or get away with it. But if you suddenly become famous or run for office, someone, somewhere, will bring up the old dirt to ruin you, even if it happened 20 years ago.

your assumption is correct - you would never be able to tell people of your murderous deeds and expect them to forgive

No.

In 1992 I was beat up by Sam Phobsamphou in the boys locker room after class.
If I saw him today I'd shoot him in the chest until he stopped moving entirely.

Let's say you kill a guy with a hammer over a crack rock. But then years later you completely turn your life around, get a job, and become fully functional. Will you forever be judged for your mistake and be outcast from society? Even though that life is entirely in the past for you, I dont think you'd ever be able to tell anyone about it for fear of judgment.

And the victims family?, their (punishment) lasts a lifetime!....And really, can killing someone with a hammer EVER be classed as a mistake or accident?..I dont think so!

1) Keep you fucking mouth shut!

2) Pray to Jesus and ask for forgiveness.

3) Keep your fucking mouth shut!

I have a lot of enemies too, but chances are if I were to kill 'em (more like butcher them with a fucking chainsaw) I would be thrown in prison. Is it worth it? No.

To forgive can be hard. I for example specifically asked for a GOLD Legend of Zelda 3DS for Easter this year, you know. The one with Link Between Worlds built in? But then Easter came around and what did I see in my basket, but some lame "Mario and Luigi" silver one with an apologist note from the Easter Bunny saying he looked far and wide for a Gold 3DS to no avail. Fucking horseshit that bunny.

Anyway, it's taken me a while, but my mother has told me it's best to forgive and move on. I see now the wisdom in her words. If we stay bitter over all the injustices done to us in this world, then we would never stop being angry.

"You have spent your whole life thinking there are rules. There aren't. We used to be gorillas, all we had is what we could take and defend." -- Lorne Malvo

Morality is just an artifact of the forebrain trying to rationalize and justify what the hind brain wants. Forgiveness is for when retribution is too expensive.

You're confusing surrender and forgiveness.

Nothing you do intentionally is an accident. That's just a word we use to sugarcoat our own flaws while demonizing others.

"We used to be gorillas." He acknowledges we aren't and thus that's a lame excuse. This is the kind of shit people say to justify behavior they know is wrong.

There are plenty of rules. Unwritten rules that keep society together. You want lawlessness, go live in Syria.

There's no statute of limitations for murder. And I'm strictly talking about social consequences, not legal.
Social and legal consequences are tied together. The reason for the legal consequences is because of society. The person in this case has not paid the debt to society so they are morally bankrupt.

Actual social consequences, such as being ostracized or shunned by society would depend if society was aware of the crime.

No forgiveness for certain crimes, murder being one. Screw forgiveness in general in fact at least when it comes to criminal justice, leave that for social matters. Eye for an Eye for serious crimes, that's what I would like to see and for lesser victimless crimes a statute of limitations and the chance for leniency from a judge.

forgiveness is something that can possibly be given by an individual

but forgiveness should NEVER be done by the law

if you murdered someone - even if it was 60 years ago and you're 90 now - you deserve judgement
