Hey All,

Far too much surfing time and far too many stupid downloads have clogged my computer to the point that it takes longer to load than my PII 133 win98 backup machine. I am currently running Windows ME. Stuff is not working everywhere and it's time to start all over again, but the only thing holding me back is Outlook Express. Does anyone know where the emails get filed? Is there a backup utility or something?

Thanks,

Dang...I used to have that memorized. I think there should be a folder or something in C:\Program Files\Outlook Express that contains your e-mail. If it were just plain Outlook, I could tell you in a snap...

it's in \windows\application data\...

somewhere in there is a folder called outlook express that has your email in it. when u reinstall you can just import your email from the "oe 5 store directory"

i suggest you make a backup of the directory before you reinstall, tho.

File>Export..., then on the new install, File>Import...

Why do things the difficult way?

Or if that's too much, try Express Assist, which has been recommended dozens of times in these forums...

Ok, what you do, is you go to options, and then maintenance. Under there, there is an option to "change store directory." Change the directory to a folder that you can backup, then after you reinstall, go to import, outlook express 5, and check import from store folder. This should work, as I use it all the time. I actuallt have a second hard disk in my comoputer that I backup and store almost all of my important info and intallers that i would need after a reinstall. I simply change the store folder to my other drive, then import it after installing. I guess if you don't have a second HD, or partition, then you could just burn the folder to a cd.
sorry for the long/borring post...........

C:\windows\application data\identities\Registry Numbers (yours would be different than mine\microsoft\outlook express\ here you will see the .dbx files.

Anyway, copy all the .dbx files (all files) in the outlook express folder and back them up somewhere. Once you install new OS, click back thru to that same place and paste them all there. It will ask if you want to replace files...just say yes. All your old emails, addresses, etc, will all be there, when you setup your email account. :)

I used to lose this stuff all the time, then I learned. Now I copy and back those up every couple days.
