Does anyone know how the shipping fees work on multiple items from Amazon's marketplace?

I assume it's per item, but does anyone know if they charge a certain amount for a certain amount of items? I was just trying to find out if they charge the 3.49 for each book or if they lump some of them together. And like I said, I think already know the answer, I just want to be certain 🙂
