Does anyone know anything about electronics here?

I need some sort of small in-line device that can take a mic in (either 1/8" or 1/4") and output to 1/8" or RCA. It would also need to run on batteries or the 12V from a car. So basically what it would be like is a box that you plug a microphone into and if you wanted you could plug some headphones in and hear yourself talk. I know I could do this with a boombox or something, but it needs to be small (5" x 5" x 3" would be about the maximum size). If anyone know hows I could make this or buy this for relatively cheap, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Funny. I don't mean electronics as in MP3 players, TVs, cell phones; I mean electronics as in resistors, circuits, and transistors. Many people know much about the fomer while being totally inept with the latter (myself included).

a couple transistors for gain, and then one as an emitter-follower for headphone output.

guess you could use a little power opamp like the LM386 too.. it has u of up to 200. so.. thats probably enough for a mic. yeah, that would be the simplest route.. LM386, couple resistors and caps, and a 9v battery.

Umm...a telephone does that.

You can also just get a headset cellphone thingie. You know what I'm talking about, joe!
