and not just a town in the desert...like house/trailer in the middle of the dessert?

This is m dream. Once lil rudeguy is old enough, I want to move to where its always hot, I don't have to worry about a lawn and I can go out back and shoot stuff.

My questions are:
What about water?
Are there people that own desert plots that sell them?
What about internet?

I'd really like to do this. Arizona is looking good. I would love to live in Sheriff Joe's county!

in many deserts you can drill a well to get water. the cost is based on the depth of drilling required to hit ground water, so it might be pretty expensive

internet- satellite, i just got a flyer in the mail about a new faster service offering:
Discover the Power of ExedeSM by ViaSat
ExedeSM Broadband is super-fast Internet created at a price you can afford. With download speeds up to 4x faster than the average DSL speed*, you can easily download videos, listen to music, and even stream movies right from your computer.

Water ,you drill or pray it rains and collect it.
A lot of desert is government owned so you would probably need to hit them up.
Any education system will suck unless old enough means in college.
Finally, all there will be is satellite unless you just happen to have a plot sitting in a perfect spot. (Or are rich enough to have them run a line there)

Sheriff Joe is a piece of shit.

That being said, you can find some nice plots of land in the middle of nowhere out here. Have you looked in a specific area of Arizona? I would recommend north of Tucson, perhaps near Oro Valley. That isn't in Sheriff Joe's county tho.

If you want to go out and shoot stuff all the time, why not move out near Sedona or Flagstaff? They are surrounded by national forest. You can go and shoot out there whenever you want.

Check out near Williams or Strawberry, both very cool areas in Arizona

Sheriff Joe's county has almost 4 million rednecks people in it, though west and south of Buckeye is pretty empty. For water, well drilling is first choice followed by water hauling. If you really pursue this, watch out for "beautiful ranch lands - cheap!" scams. Often the lots they are pushing have either no water or no legal access. Land prices in AZ have not followed housing prices downward. Also, don't buy site unseen. Drive around and peek at the neighbors. Rural and small town Arizona is going through a meth epidemic at the moment. Things will likely improve as the methheads die off.

Also, try to see the area in the monsoons to find out if the lot floods or the road floods. Some of the desert soils turn to pure mud when it rains.

I'll admit driving through New Mexico I was jealous of those that did the exact same thing the OP describes. Would be so awesome to live in that kind of solitude and go hiking through the hills/mountains when weather permits.

If you want pure desert, I would recommend checking out Gila Bend and Casa Grande. They are very very HOT. Williams and Strawberry have more temperate weather and lots of forest. Maybe try Safford too.

It would be cool to be able to throw a handful of chicken down on the rocks to fry them....just like in Vegas Vacation.

My mom lives in Oro Valley. Nice place. Seems expensive. Lots of wildlife. There were bobcats living in their bushes trying to eat their small dog. Also mountain lions and rattlesnakes. I'm from Ohio so it is a bit against my grain.

Cody Lundin from the show Dual Survival did this very thing. You also can take classes from him if you want.

there are many land offices that sell plots of land.

Some have water, other do not.
You need to ensure that you can get water where you plant yourself.
Also power, it can get expensive to string 20-100 miles of wire.

If you are not going to use electric from outside; plan on having a large propane tank and a generator with fuel storage.

Drive along any of the interstates in AZ or New Mexico and you will see billboards and/or flyers for land.

WATER is the key; if not available year round and/or by well, the place is a playground only.

There's an abandoned "Vulture gold mine" SW of Wickenburg, which is in the far NW corner of Maricopa County. The county has plans to create a huge new "public recreation" park in that area, however.
Note: To stay above 32 degrees year round, you'd need to locate south of Prescott, although the nighttime temperature sometimes gets down to the mid-20's as far south as Tucson.

My grandpa did. Moved to a ghost town called Montello, NV. Seriously this place has like 25 residents.

It used to be quite a bit bigger when there was a railroad passing through and Silver mines were still producing. Now it is turning into a ghost town.

I have some pretty good memories visiting out there. You can just walk off for miles in any direction and explore the desert.

Water was never an issue due to wells. And, there were mountains all around with springs, etc. Closest bigger town is Wendover at the Utah border. It's like 50 miles away.

Check it out. I bet you can buy a place out there for dirt cheap.

I like AZ. You can live out on the edge of Phoenix and be really close to nothing, but also not a bad drive from people and stuff.

Not sure why one would voluntarily want to go suffer in that horrendous heat and constant sand blowing in your eyes.

I'll stick to the north, where I don't immediately start sweating the minute I step foot outside. :p

There's desert in southern BC. It makes for great wine growing :)

There's tumbleweeds, cacti, sagebrush... the whole lot.

I spent about a year and a half in the desert in eastern Nevada...70 miles from the closest town.
My wife and kids were with me.
The construction job had a small trailer park set up right outside the gates of the gold mine we were working on.
The water for the park came out of the ground at over 100 degrees, went into a large holding tank to settle and cool before it went to the trailer park. It was full of placer gold. Our first trailer had a regular tank-type flush toilet...I took a couple hundred dollars worth of super-fine gold dust out of the tank in the first year. (then, the damned thing broke and parts weren't available, so I replaced it with a standard RV toilet...no more free gold dust...)
At least once per month, a herd of wild mustangs wandered through the park, and we always had plenty of fresh venison to eat. :shifty eyes:

It's definitely NOT for everyone...an hour and a half to town for anything...grocery shopping, medical, etc. makes it a bit inconvenient...and with lil rudeguy's medical issues...are you SURE this is something you want to do?

I live in the high desert of New Mexico. If you want to survive the killer tsunami maybe you should too. Altitude is 6500 ft.
