we bought a power washer, and i thought i had enough oil in it but i dont think i did...

anyway, i was washing, and the engine shut off. then i took off the dipstick to see if the oil was ok and it was smoking. i wouldnt really care about that, except for one damn thing...

i cant pull the latch to start it (i dunno if its called a latch, the string that you pull to start the engine)....it gets STUCK at some point, and becomes impossible to move...wtf?

will it be ok or should i return it?
 
Are you sure you didn't maybe, say, seize the engine. I dunno about smaller engines like that but on a car with lack of oil...seized engine. If so that means it's a complete loss.
 
i did i thought the dipstick was messed up...i realized it really need ALOT of oil...it took way more than i thought.

it ran for about 5 mins before it locked up/seized.

Let it cool off and add some oil to it. Then try starting it up, while praying 😉.

How far can you pull it? Does the engine rotate at all? If the engine rotates, then it is not siezed, it is likely something in the power washer pump, or a damaged recoil. The spring can become jammed. even if the engine doesn't rotate, it can be a stock/broken spring.

Small engines are more susecpable to low oil than a car as the oil gets passed around the engine by a 'slinger' which is bacily a piece of steel that flips though the oil at the bottom of the crank case. If the oil gets to the point where the slinger can not sling oil because the oil is stuck to the sides of the crankcase, then you will have lubrication failure and the engine will sieze.

It is not the oil smoking, it is blowby in the crankcase. It happens with almost all small engines as their crankcase is not evacuated like in a car. There is only a reed valve that vents to atmosphere on most engines.

Not picking on you specifically, but I always found it distasteful that so many places will let you return a perfectly good piece of equipment that only broke because the buyer messed up. Whatever happened to "you break it-you buy it"?

Tip it upside down, so oil floods the cylinder. Pour oil in the sparkplug hole. Find a way to crank it using a wrench on the end of the shaft, or whatever it takes. Once you bust it loose, it will run again, though it will probably burn oil.
 
If you can turn it in either direction at least 1/4 turn, and it was low on oil, you probably broke the connecting rod. (common for small engines when run low on oil)

A seized motor won't allow you turn the crank at all, in either direction.
