Well, as you take the video, it records it to the hard drive. Much like a different camera would record to a tape, disc, or memory card. That's basically how they would work.
30 gb is not a lot, especially with HD video. A 1 hour DV tape is ~25 GB. Video cams with HDDs usually record in MPEG-2 though, so it's compressed. That's not necessarily good if you want to edit the video, but it makes it easy to put it on a DVD.
This camcorder is quite unique, but until they have the quality of the JVC GR-HD1, I would wait for the obvious upgrade.
Imagine a tapeless JVC GR-HD1. Best of 2 worlds. No more tape handling and longer continuous shoots, better quality movies, quality downloads and transfers, no dirty tapeheads,plus removeable hdds, maybe.
