Last week we had issues with our internet, so we had an installation and service tech guy come to our house. I talked with this person about his job, and he told me that he has been working for Comcast for 2 years. The only requirement to get hired was a high school degree. I believe he makes $15/hour.

I'm curious. Is there a high turnover rate for this position? This is a position that seems to be posted quite frequently. In regards to this position, are there opportunities for advancement?

:hmm:

You can have great customer service and still be in bed with the devil and a terrible company. And I work for another evil empire.

Installers come and go as they are supposed to average a certain number of houses. So if you get a lot of simple turn ons you are good. But if you get ones that have cable/line issues it mess's up your numbers and you either burn out or they get rid of you.

Now if you know what you are doing then the hard ones might not be so bad. So the job will greatly depend on the area and the homes you are setting up. But expect to work outside a lot and many think that's great till its 20 degrees or 100+ and you are on the clock.

Those positions come and go because a lot of service/installer jobs are contract-only positions.

This goes for Comcast, DirecTV, Charter, etc.... Because they service such a large area, they contract so they don't have to pay driving mileage, fleet costs, insurance, other benefits... They typically bid the contract out and then the contractors work for whatever small startups agree to cover a given area.

I used to do this for PrimeStar installation and eventually service. It was a decent gig because the contract was $110 per install and we would do up to 8 per day. After a while, these jobs paid less and less. Now, most installers and service contractors get paid but have to provide their own coax, connectors, etc... It's not nearly as profitable as it used to be... Many people go back and forth between these jobs and electrician jobs in non-union areas.

When I was talking to him he told me he got $15 an hour. We talked for about 45 minutes which was surprising because I thought he was on the clock.

The way he described the job it sounded like he was given homes that he had to service, and he didn't have a set time that he had to finish. I could be wrong.

I know they have to climb about 20 feet to install cable boxes, and working outside is difficult.

Used to work for crapcast doing phone support for pissed off customers before they outsourced it overseas. All in all, the company is so mismanaged, no idea how they manage to stay afloat.

it's nice to have a monopoly.

my current billing dispute has me so frustrated with Comcast that I'd love to cancel services, but the only alternative is satellite or DSL.

(they're charging me $16/month in equipment rental fees for a modem and DVR that I own. nevermind the fact that I have the receipts in my hand and they have no paperwork of me accepting delivery of equipment from them)
