Does anyone here use a Maxtor Fireball-3?

I need a good HD for my firewall box at home, it's currently running on a 2.5 GB Quantum, which is more than enough for the system itself(uses around 250 MB including compilers and such), but for one thing, I like to keep various logs around, and they consume space, and I like to be able to let friends upload stuff to it once in a while, so some more space would be nice.

Im looking at a 30 GB Fireball3, which would seem perfect, seing as it's made with reliability in mind, it's under 32 GB, and seeing as the box Im running the Firewall on is an old P-II 233 on a 440LX mobo, Im guessing it'll probably have problems dealing with HD's larger than that, never really checked though, since I sure don't need more than 5-10 GB.

The only thing Im still wondering about is the noise levels, seeing as the box will be sitting in my bedroom(I don't like to clutter the rest of my apartment with computers), and so I don't want it to make too much noise.
Idle noise is definately the most important factor, seeing as the HD will be idle most of the time, so I could live with decent seek noises as long as it doesn't sound like the first gen 10K RPM Cheetah's 😉

Anyone?

Well, unfortunately MaxBlast only works under Windows, but thanks anyway 🙂

Should have mentioned the firewall will be running OpenBSD.

Same acoustic specs as the Fireball-3, but it's 7200rpm.

comments on quietness

current deal

I'd prefer the Fireball, seems like Maxtor's focus with it was reliability, which is perfect for me.
In fact I'd prefer it just cause it's a 5400 RPM'er, since performance means absolutely nothing in this case, while reliability and noise are important.

But thanks for the tip, the place I was looking at only had the 40 GB DM+8, but I found a 30 GB drive for just slightly more than the Fireball 🙂

Just in case you're considering the Plus 8 I ran across this different opinion of its quietness here.

My Seagate Barracuda IV 80 gig .... In terms of noise, the BaraIV seems to be noisier than my other Maxtor DM +8 during seeks. However, the DM +8 has a noticable spinup noise and there's this terrible whine at idle which I cannot tolerate...

Oh, sure doesn't sound like something I'd want, thanks again 🙂

It's too bad Storagereview hasn't reviewed any of these drives 🙁
