Does anyone here swim and wear glasses or contacts?

Since I swam the last time (which was several years ago) I have started wearing glasses/contact lenses.

I was just wondering if there are other people here with the same situation and was wondering what they do.

Do you wear your contacts underwater?

I am guessing that if I wear goggles while wearing my contacts the goggles will fall off when I dive in. Is that right?

What do you do?

Thanks, Ed

DO NOT open your eyes underwater with contacts, you shouldnt even swim in contacts, cuz if chlorine gets in there, you are gonna be in trouble. Take them out and go in with no eye wear, or wear goggles.

Hi Ed,

I swim every week and I wear contacts. I don't make a practice of opening my eyes under the water (not really much to see there), and I have never lost a contact. Supposedly some people do lose their contacts when swimming underwater with contacts. Sort of depends on soft or hard contacts too. I wear soft disposable. I've also heard that people who wear contacts who slightly open their eye will not lose their contact. Only open your eyes no more than the diameter of your contact. This way your eyelid will hold the contact in.

Very truly your

i swim, but not with glasses on, i've jumped in with em on accidentaly, but then taken them off. I had a cuz who swims with contacts, and he lost one once... He's got alot of beach bum friends, who swim/surf with contacts, but they carry cleaner and stuff with them all the time. if you know how to hit the water with goggles you shouldn't loose them. But I've got scuba diving friends, and its better to put them on after a dive, and unless your nearly blind, why would you need glasses swiming? unless you need em for close to check out the girls... but I'm farsighted.. so I only need em when I'm not swimming to paruse the crowds..

I used to swim with contacts all the time and never lost one, however I can't wear contacts anymore cuz they irritate my eyes too much, hope that's not why.

Yes, the reason I want to wear my contacts while swimming is so that I can check out the wonderful ladies.

I guess I'll have to see if the soft contacts fall out or not...

Thanks, Ed

I used to swim for 2hrs 3-4 times a week and I always used contacts...

use goggles thou. maybe they won't fall out, never happened to me, but still, it irritates the eyes a lot, and there is a big risk of them falling out.

i got the habit that i close my eyes when diving into the water in case the goggles fall off but well they didn't fall off very often either.

good luck

I surf and wear soft contacts. The only problem I have had is with the wave's spray washing out my contact lenses.

Sometimes in a big wipeout you HAVE to open your eyes underwater - I have never lost my contacts that way.

BTW, they make vented goggles for surfing (which can be made to your prescription as can many regular swimming goggles).

I swim all the time with soft disposable contact lenses. Pool and river, the only problem I have is they wear out quicker(I guess because of the chlorine). I usually wear 2 week contacts about six weeks, while swimming about 2-3 weeks. I open my eyes and dont wear goggles, unless snorkling.

I swam with contacts in once and my eyes got SOOOOOOOOO dry afterwards, it was terrible. My eyes just couldn't produce any tears so it wasn't fun. I also had to drive home 20 miles right after swimming too. I'll never do that again.

I swim with contacts in too. I just don't open my eyes. Also, if you do wear your contacts when you swim, make sure to take them out and clean them very well afterwards. There can be some pretty nasty stuff in the water that will like to grow between your contact and eye. :Q

I have swam on several occasions with my soft contacts. It seemed like a bad idea at the time, but I never had any ill effects.

I would do it again (until something bad happens). :)
