I ended up picking up a gently used Yamaha YTS-23. Just came in today:

Anything with strings generally, but currently I routinely play guitar, bass and various synths(keys)

It's got a nice sound, though the cat is displeased. It's been more than 20 years since I picked up a tenor, feels nice. I picked up a Kliq tuner and it's *really* nice to have instant tone feedback.

I was a violin prodigy of sorts when I was young but forced practice really beat the joy out of it for me.

It's a shame.

Yeah, I don't think people realize how much influence the educational process (or lack there of) has on students. There's a lot of discussion in the math community about terrible math education. Seems music education has similar problems.
