As far as quattro goes, if you want to perform well in the snow, most likely you should not use any of the OEM tires in the winter. I had pirellis and they weren't too great. The "ideal" solution is to get winter tires for winter and summer for summer. For me it wasn't an option, as I could barely afford one set of tires when the pirellis wore out.

Last winter I saw an A4 Quattro basically sliding down my block at about 5mph. It was going so slow SUVs were blowing by it. That guy must have had the OEM tires. It looked really pathetic.

Could have been summer tires or worn treads too. My car did better than most SUVs with the pirellis, but still not great.

As far as reliability... I would never bank on german car reliability, unless it's a porsche.

I concur. My 2001 S4 was great for the first 2.5 years, then it started having major problems. First, one side of the rear spoiler busted off causing the paint on the trunk to crack and crumble near the bolt. However, to be fair, the spoiler was a dealer addition, and they were able to repair it. A few months later, the car began to have problems starting, as it would take 5+ attempts of turning the engine to get it going. Finally, the entire transmission had to be replaced. Luckily it was still under warranty, but a transmission replacement after 2.5 years was unacceptable IMO. That is when i decided to sell the car, as I didn't want to have to deal with any future mishaps when the warranty ran out.

The other German cars that I have driven seem to have issues with smaller parts breaking, such as clasps on the center console, or elecitral components dieing, such as the motors for the side view mirrors. We'll see how the 2004 S4 holds up, but I have a feeling the Acura will win in the reliability arena.

Just remember that the S4 is a performance car and more than likely ships with performance tires.

AWD won't do jack if your tires aren't suited for the proper weather conditions. Be prepared to drop another $800-$1000 in quality winter tires for it.

And $50 every season to switch tires. $800-$1000 may be a bit low. I'd say more like $1500, assuming you want separate wheels.

I ended up selling the performance tires back to the dealership and purchased a nice set of all-season tires (not sure if most dealers will do this, though). If you want to be able to show off the power in nice conditions, keep the standard performance tires. However, they won't help you in the winter or other adverse driving conditions.

Before purchasing the car, decide if it will be your daily driver or not. Depending on your answer, you may want to consider different tires or even a different car.

what about the other 2 VW's and the 2002 Audi?

sorry kid, go find another forum to lie on.

It was a 2001 S4, my previous post is a typing error. The other two VWs were my sister's Jetta (2002) and my dad's W8 Passat.

Are you guys done, or do I need to retrieve all the proof-of-ownership paper's from the bank and scan them for you? Would you like to see my bank account status while we're at it? Or perhaps the yearly income of my father? Perhaps I should just throw in the SSN and PIN #s while I am at it, just for verification. You all need to calm down.

As for the OP, feel free to PM me if you still have any questions. Obviously I won't be able to help you out much in this thread.

That just screams pathetic. Bragging about how much your Dad makes on an internet forum??? Or how much money he has given you? Pathetic.

Christ, guys, I'm all for jumping all over somebody, but enough's enough. Give the kid a break.

I have a 2002 Quattro A4 MT. Besides the engine coil troubles (ugh), the car has been extremely reliable. Not one problem (60k+ miles)... I have test driven an B6 S4, and it is very impressive.
An Acura/Nissan may have better long term reliability ratings and value, but there is no way I'd rather drive anything else besides my Audi...... it's got soul!

I would also suggest getting winter tires if you're concerned about the snow that much. I live in upstate NY and have 1 set of all terrains and it suits me fine, but every situation is different.
If you're spending that much on a car, an extra grand is very little.

Once again, please read the above post. I haen't been bragging (in fact, I've done quite the opposite). Everything I have posted has been a direct answer the questions. I'm sorry that you all have a severe issue with jealousy (even based on nothing more than assumptions). I've never claimed to be rich or to have a lot of money. I've claimed to own a few nice cars, that's all. Get over it.

I'm not jealous of you in the slightest. Why would I be? Secondly, I didn't try to find out how much your father makes and I don't care how much he makes. I was posting a Hoover's listing of the Company he works for. Now, I'm not sure if that guy is your Uncle, Father, or Grandfather, but you are FOS. You've talked about 8 different cars and claimed them to be yours. Problem is, they were not, so you DID lie, and I still don't believe your family even had that many, but not that I really care. I just like pointing out when people lie to impress others. SAD SAD SAD.

What's MT? I've had a few issues with my A4.

The fuel level gauge got stuck on the fuel line and I ended up running out of gas. Of course, I didn't know it had run out of gas because it showed half full and had an engine light.

A couple of times the light that comes on if you don't fully screw in the gas cap came on, but I had screwed in the gas cap fully.

One of the hoses (I forgot which) collapsed and was causing the car to stall when turning left.

Finally, though it's an easy fix that I can do myself, every once in a while the in-dash changer crashes and I have to do a hard reset by unseating then reseating the fuse for the radio.

I did also get my ignition coils replaced, but there was nothing wrong with them, they were replaced because the parts were recalled.

No, please let them continue. The fact that they can jump on something that was never said and thus doesn't exist is astounding, and simply shows the extreme level of jealousy many members of this forum have.

Mill did a few minutes of research to reveal that you're full of sh!t like previously stated.
I don't intend to make a flamewar with you, but when you fabricate reality make sure that all your facts check out. Otherwise you look like a fool who is constantly backpeddling (like you are now).

The mathematics of money work the same for everyone else and there is really no way around it. You claimed you "saved up" for your first s4. I can believe that you saved money, but definatly not a minimum of 45K. Lets say for a moment you saved up half of the price of the s4. You would have an easy 20-25K left on your car loan. That is a minimum of 350-400 a month for the car payment for about 3-5 years. That doesn't include insurance or anything else associated with owning a car.

Now you have a 2004 acura TSX, which runs in the mid to high 20K range. So the theoretical payments on the S4 would be similar to real world payments of a TSX. So were talking about 400 a month just for the car. You're a college kid and it's highly unlikely you can generate enough income to afford the ownership costs of a car.

This seems like the typical adolescent game of internet charades. You've already come out in this thread to reveal that your claims in other threads about owning some other cars were actually false and they were other family members cars. This is something I see all the time on the internet, it's very easy to see through and the house of cards always come tumbling down. At this point your credibility is shot and you should just quit while you're behind.

More and more generalizations and assumptions. Like I said before, the only car that I in fact paid for myself with cash was my TSX. The others were either given to me or I paid for monthly. I don't generate a lot of income, but I do save a lot. After six years of working with very few expenses, it is quite easy to purchase a car or two as I did.

I do apoligize if my claim to have owned 2 cars that were not directly mine but part of my family offended you, but that hardly changes the fact that I have at one time or another owned a 2001 S4, 2001 Jetta, 2004 S4, and 2004 TSX. If I remember correctly, the thread you mention was about the reliability of VW (or German) cars. Therefore, mentioning that I had 3 VWs in my possession (or that I often drove and was witness to their reliability) was hardly lie. A stretch? Perhaps. Detrimental to the conversation? Hardly. Important in any way shape or form? Nope.

So far, the only thing this thread has proved is that Anandtech members have a certain knack for ignoring the OP and starting side conversations, and that many are extremely jealous to the point that they can be jealous of non-existent things. It's quite sad, really.

Getting back on topic but I was wondering when Audi is changing the S4.

Is it in '05 or '06?

I see that used '04s are going for the low $40s. There seem to be a bunch available too. I wonder why.

Nah, that is ok. I e-mailed 'ole Steve a link to this thread, so I'm sure he can register and tell us if you are telling the truth or not. So if you are telling the truth there is nothing to be worried about. He might give you less gas money or something for being a snot-nosed brat, but nothing major will come of it. But, if you are lying(which you are), then I'm pretty sure he is going to be pissed.

Haha. You are pathetic. I hope that by Steve you mean my father, in which case I'm sure he'd be more than glad to settle this. However, that's assuming he's willing to take time out of his busy day to respond to such a worthless email that you never really sent, anyway. 'Tis a shame.

Yep, since he has so much control over my life, I'm scared silly right now. Oh wait, he doesn't pay for anything of mine anymore... looks like I'm safe. Would you like to email my boss too? Since he has more control over me, I bet you could actually get somewhere with your threats.

So either you lied in thoes other threads, or you're lieing here, or both. I'm not generalizing anything, I am going strictly by information that you have provided in this thread and others. Assumptions can be made because the reality of monetary matters is the same for everyone. There is no magical way to change how money works. I doubt you can even tell me what amortization is.

So you were working since you were 13 years old, and saved up tens of thousands of dollars (possibly over 50K) and spent it all in cash, on cars? I find that incredibly hard to believe.
I was part of the work force and living on my own before you were even out of grade school, I know how things work. I know that you are full of sh!t. This can be chalked up to your parents resources.

I have nothing to be jealous of kid, I have a real life and no need to lie about it. You will learn that honesty looks much better on you than an expensive car.

What I find sad is that you had many lies that were revealed and you admitted to. You STILL expect people to take you seriously. You're bashing longstanding members of the forum and making a general ass of yourself. Part of growing up is knowing when to stop.

Actually, you almost hit the nail right on the head. I started when I was 13, and slowly worked up to where I am now. Your estimate is a little high, but you are close. It's the first correct assumption you've had in this thread, actually.

You keep speaking of these many lies, of which I can find perhaps one, but that is hardly a lie and I've already addressed that issue.

Are you done, yet?
