If you do was it worth it ? I know mainly you spend this much on a laptop if you want to game on it or do a lot of graphics work on it I believe! I know any laptop at this price is going to be very heavy to because of all the stuff it will have, huge hard drive, etc.

I don't like abnormally large and heavy laptops. My business partner and I paid about $2500 each for ours, fully loaded. You should keep your eyes open for deals (for example, Dell had 30% off at one point IIRC).

Thanks.

Is it worth going all out on a laptop?

I am talking everything the latest and greatest! Maybe two hard drives in the laptop if its possible to have enough space! Fastest and biggest hard drives you can get for a laptop for both hard drives, fastest graphics card, processor, at least 2 gigs of the fastest laptop ram maybe more if possible, best sound card and speakers you can get with a laptop builtin, of couse I would buy headphones to so I wouldn't disturb people at times heck may even use just headphones but still its nice to have the option to not have to and still having it sound good through the builtin laptop speakers.

How long could you use a laptop this powerful in a car from the battery adaptor inside the car or whatever its called? Would it hurt a car or truck any?

The 'latest and greatest' gaming laptops are an absolute joke. Feel the amount of heat coming out of the back of your computer... and then imagine all that heat coming out of a 12lb (ya.. a fvcking 12 heavy-ass pounds) box and burning your penis.

The latest Alienware laptop ad made me spit my soda all over my keyboard.. It's a 3.2ghz DESKTOP processor.. Those put out like 100W+ of heat!! So.. how much battery life are you gonna get with that?

Seriously.. don't buy a 'gaming' laptop. Anything heavier than 6.5lbs and thicker than 1.5" should not even be considered a laptop. Also, usually anything bigger than those dimensions has sh!tty build quality, loud fans, is heavy as hell..

You can buy a decently-fast laptop, with good battery life (using Centrino or AMD), that is thin (like 1.3" thick), light (5 lbs), and still has a half-way decent graphics card..

But, these big fat bricks that try to pass for a laptop today are jokes. How the fvck are you gonna 'game' on a laptop when you only get 1hour of battery life?

Big laptops are my peeve.. Five years ago, I swear.. the average size of a new laptop was smaller than the average size of today's laptops..

Well I know the battery life would be very short but thats why I would use the car lighter that can be used foi smoking or powering a laptop I think. Can't it?

Wouldn't that last for as long as you wanted to have the laptop on in the car?

Would this hurt the car or truck?

I would use a power outlet inside a place and maybe sometimes the battery if I was moving around a little.

I know your going to say whats the point in a laptop though if you will do that? There are no wires and I can take it with me where ever I go!

believe it or not, the biggest 100+ gig notebook hard drives are the same size as the run of the mill 4200 rpm 40 gb drive, and use the same amount of power.

I just got a very good laptop for $1450.

Here are the stats:

1.73 Ghz
1.25 gigs of DDR2 533
DVD writer
ATI Radeon X700

It was a Gateway and I think it was worth it. I can game and work on the go and the screen is on of those new pretty pretty ones :)

Yes but can you play the latest games and the ram hogging games like simcity 4, BF2 I think it is, Quake 4, doom 3, etc without any slowdowns? What resolution can you play all these games at on your laptop though?

Christ, you're gonna burn out your laptop in a day if you actually expect to be able to play all those games full settings and crap.

Save the gaming for the desktop.

Edit: Might as well just get yourself a shuttle box, about the same size...weight.

I am not the person who drives lol. Long 8 to 14 hour roadtrips are so boring.

Paid $1500 for a nicely loaded new Dell XPS M170. I don't really see what spending twice-thrice as much would have gotten me.

The reason for this is so the laptop would be more future proof. Sure nothing is 100% future proof but if you get more than you need that way the laptop when used 2 to 3 years from now should still be quick enough and worth using with new games, etc.

So a Pentium M 2.0GHz/1GB/80GB/DVDRW/GF6800Ultra isn't future proof enough? :)

Actually I hear your argument a lot, and it really doesn't make sense. Lets say we both have $3000 total we can spend on computer equipment over the next four years.

Person A spends all $3k on one machine, top of the line in every measure, and scores 100 points on a hypothetical benchmark.

Person B spends $1.5k on one machine, pretty darn fast but not top of the line, and it scores 90 points on a hypothetical benchmark.

Fast forward two years. Processors, GPUs, etc. have all gotten much faster. Person A is stuck with the same computer. Person B has $1.5k left to upgrade to the newest hardware and keep their machine current, or to buy a whole new machine altogether.

Spending less now means more money for a newer computer down the line.
