Florida sucks. It's hot, it's muggy, it rains all the time, it's FULL of bugs. It's got the flattest, ugliest landscape in the US, and iyou can't even buy a hamburger because everone working in fast food only speaks some freaking Hatian language or something.

I haven't been to Hawaii.

Anyone been to Naples? A friend of mine can hook me up with an insurance job in the area. Apparently he's doing really well there.

Notfred hit it on the dot in regards to FL, I have actually been to Naples (I'm hoping you mean FL here) but it all blended together as I went to several places in the span of a few days. It all seemed to be swamp to me, like New Orleans but with more old people and less character.

HI is gorgeous, I've lived there when I was younger, my GF is from there. We've talked about moving there but in the end the cost of living just plain sucks. In addition non-service jobs are actually fairly hard to come by (though not impossible) and as a recent grad very few companies would probably cover your moving expenses.

No place is perfect, between the two I'd pick being broke in HI over FL any day, but then I'd never move to FL. Maybe go hang with your friend in FL for a week or so and see what you think.

If you are white, I would not recommend moving to Hawaii. Many native Hawaiians (as well as the local Japanese population) do not like "howlies" (outsiders) living there. My girlfriend (Cuban-American) spent a semester there at University of Hawaii at Manoa. She encountered a number of angry and racist locals during her time there.

That said, it's a beautiful place to visit, and well worth the trip. The weather is perfect all year round.

Grew up in HAwaii (27 now). All my family still lives there (going for a visit next month).

First things first, unless you have a bad-@ss job lined up, or family to stay with, it will be way too expensive. Crappy housing is expensive. Food is expensive. Utilities are horrendous. Gas is super expensive. Moving there is expensive. Nearly everything you can think of is expensive. And to make matters worse, the Feds want Hawaii to start issuing paid licenses for ocean fishing!!! WTF!!!!

Seriously. Go to the book store and look at some books about living in Hawaii (The Price of Paradise, All about Living in Hawaii, or probably the best So You Want to Live in Hawaii: A Guide to Settling and Succeeding in the Islands).

After going through "So you want to live in Hawaii" you'll have a much better idea of what your options are.

Not the best time to move to Hawaii unless you already have a good paying job offer or are independently wealthy. Real estate values are soaring on Oahu almost daily. When property values here go up, everything else does too.

I could have sworn you were talking about Texas...

A lot of people that move to Hawaii move back to the states in a few years for a few reasons:

1)It's REALLY expensive

2)Racism and hospitality as mentioned in other posts

3)People don't like the idea of being "stuck" on a few islands.

I don't understand all these FL bashers...other than they came here and the local chicks told them to 'head out! nerd'.

Palm Beach County is one of the wealthiest places in the world, most of all exotic cars sell in miami: south beach...coral gables....then you have Ft Lauderdale: las olas, the strip, etc.

Florida is a great place to live if you make it outdoors at least once a day. You have ocean and mostly nice weather year round.

Hawaii is great too, but like most oceanfront and proximity it starts expensive. Add in the fact that it's geographically isolated and most items are imported, it gets more expensive.

If you have money most of the locals don't seem to mind you as much. If you don't have money then the living reality + the pressure of local aminousity is harsh.

I could see a debate on CA vs FL, but HI is like comparing Porsche 996's to a Firebird / Mustang.

I love florida, but I am outside a lot. I have been to Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Mass, Cali, Georgia, Texas, Indiana, New York, North and South Carolina, probably a few others I have forgotten (minus places just passing through). While I have always managed to find women where I wanted, the florida lifestyle works best for me.

Naples is on the west coast of florida....sort of the lame side historically. Naples / Ft. Myers had been a popular retiree spot until recently. Now more younger people and the like are moving in and it's getting a bit of a nightlife.

Every time I've been down to Miami, I always tell myself I want to live there.

Too bad they don't have alot of my line of work down there.

Basically, I'm stuck in the NYC area until I retire. :(

I live in Hawaii and been to Naples multiple times when the grandparents lived right near there. Florida is hot, it seems much hotter than Hawaii.
As stated, have a job lined up or be prepared for doing some small job.
As far as racism goes, I have not experienced it, and I am white. I lived in Kona (on the Big Island) most of my 8 years here and that is much more local than Oahu. Thing about Oahu is that its busy, and I could see how people could perceive others being racist by being rude. Sure there are some rude local guys around, especially at some of the surf spots, thing I have found though, is if you are nice and respectful no one will give you crap. If someone does give you crap, it does pay to show some backbone, enough to not get hurt but if you ever want to go back their, you can't just sulk away. It does help to have local friends, because locals throw the best parties. :)
The property values on all the islands seem to be insane. In just 4 years my house in Kona has doubled in value, and up north Big Island, think boonies, the same applies, houses are going for upward of $200k for little tiny places, it is crazy.
I live in Honolulu now and goto UH-Manoa, and Oahu is definatly the big city. Lots of things to . Each island has its own unique feel and flavor. The Big Island is much more relaxed, very spread out, and unless you like nature, hiking, go beach, ocean, you are probably out of luck. Maui is very tourist oriented, and gives the feeling, to me at least, that it is what people think of Hawaii, palm trees on the beach with a hotel and golf course right there.

Thanks for the input. I really do enjoy going outdoors year-round, so that's why I'm looking for a warm-weather region.
