Does anyone here jailbreak their phone anymore?

Jailbreaking a phone that's still getting software updates is generally a bad idea, since the jailbreak is probably going to cause problems with those updates installing correctly.

But, hey... if you're still trying to squeeze another year or two out of something obsolete like a Samsung Galaxy S5, have at it!

I used to be into hacking my phone, rooting it, and putting a fresh clean Android install on it. It was back when I always had cheap Android phones.

But I've since stopped caring about such trivial crap and have just used the phone as is, since I got my first non-shit phone in the Zenphone 2, on to the Galaxy 7/8/10.

It kinda mimics how I used to be obsessed with building my own computer and paid attention to hardware and stuff. I still build my own rig, but I couldn't care less about hardware now. I also wouldn't be opposed to buying a ready built one as long as it had good parts (like Origin PCs are good, but they're expensive).

If a phone works how can it be obsolete?

TBH I never played too much with phone stuff, I barely even know how to load an OS. I could figure it out if I googled it but just never really bothered or had a need. Mine is fairly standard so it's not jailbroken or unlocked or anything. Though it's a phone I bought outright and not a carrier phone, so I don't know if that makes any kind of difference, maybe it actually is jailbroken by default since it's not carrier bound.

Speaking of phones I can't wait for the Librem to come out and I hope it will be available in Canada. I really like the idea of an "open" phone that's not bound to Google or Apple and does not have spy stuff in it.

Used to root but it was annoying that OS updates would break the phone. Now I just use stock android + adguard.

I used to root my Android, now I don't have to. It finally does what I want it to native to the OS

If you're still using an Android or Apple phone that isn't getting security updates anymore, you're kinda playing with fire, no?
Why? If someone want's my contact list I'll give it to them, I'd be just as happy to share the pictures of my dogs. That's all there is on my phone. No secret information, no compromising photos, no plan for world domination. I've always thought that people that keep that stuff on their phones are insane.

That's the least of your worries if you get hacked. They could put a trojan on the phone that spies on you (well the OS does that anyway especially Android...) and they could also put something that will infiltrate your home network. Ex: you connect to data or public wifi and pickup the trojan. Connect to your home wifi, then it unloads the trojan on the rest of your network if something internal also has a vulnerability. Of course if your wifi is on a separate vlan as it should be it won't be too much of an issue, but still. They can do lot of damage. They can also screen cap what's on your screen etc... basically whatever exploit that lets them do remote code execution can let them do pretty much anything you can think of.

Apparently pretty much every major corporation, bank, credit card company and the reporting agency's haven't been updating their phones, they've all been hacked.

I'm not running it jailbroken at the moment, but my 6s is on a jailbreakable iOS version and I'd just need about 20 minutes to get it done.

Should do that actually

Honestly, both ecosystems are about equal now. Those wars have died down a lot- people just prefer what they got used to now. Both systems do the same thing.

I seriously loved Android, being able to root and customize my phones was wonderful. Also, I love big phones & Apple came way late to that game.

Then I got cancer and my first iPad,it played nicely with my MacBook, then I got my first iPhone...a 16GB 6 plus. Being able to take a call on my iPad in bed was so easy...Flash forward, 64 GB Product Red iPhone XR. Best battery life of any phone I have ever owned. The Apple ecosystem just makes my life simple, easier.

I just stopped caring. Used to Root, install custom mods, etc.. etc... Now I'm just too busy with work shit and being a dad to care anymore... Much like videogames. Used to play, now I rarely touch them.

Also what exactly is the difference between jailbreaking and rooting? I thought jailbreaking was basically "unlocking" the phone to do something like switch carriers.

I haven't rooted this phone cause it's a PITA, and I need it for work, but I find it offensive that companies have root privileges on my phone but I don't. Really offensive. If they're gonna maintain control, I should get the phone free since what I'm actually doing is borrowing it, not owning it.

Off topic, but how are you doing since then?

I think I’ve only jail broken my phone once. It was an older iPhone and it let me make some extra customizations. However, I haven’t done it since then.

I think it depends on the person as some use them interchangeably. However, I think it’s that jailbreaking can include more than just providing root access. For example, a custom OS may require a custom bootloader.
