Does anyone here have experience with Propecia (finasteride)?

Any of you guys try this stuff or rogaine? I'm trying to find the best way for my dad to halt his hair loss. He's in his 40 and really healthy no smoking or drinking and plays sports so I don't know why this is happening considering my grandfather didn't have this case.

I hear you need a prescription for propecia. What's the best way to go about getting one for him?

You can't get a prescription for someone else. If he wants it he'll have to go to the doctor. I used it for 3 years. It slows down hair loss. I didn't notice any side effects. You have to go back yearly for a blood test. On my last one, my liver toxins were higher than normal. So I stopped using it and the numbers went back down.

Hair loss for some people is natural... just go with the flow and don't let society's stigmas plague you. You are YOU.

I'm in my 40s and losing major hair. My brother has a full head of hair. Smoking, drinking etc have no effect that I know of. I guess your time might be coming soon......:clock:

From what I remember, the tendency to experience hair loss skips a generation, and carries over from their mother's side of the family (i.e., look at your maternal grandfather for an indication of how you'll turn out).

Might be an old wives' tail, but that's the way I'd always heard it.

23 and have used propecia for about a year now. It has regrown + slowed down hair loss. It's meant for certain types though, check with your doctor.

Rogaine was too much of a bother and I didn't get good results.

You might try here:

hairlosstalkforums

The "big 3" of hairloss treatments seem to be:

1. propecia (finasteride) or dutasteride (a stronger version of the same drug)
2. rogaine (minoxidil 5%)
3. nizoral 2% (a shampoo)

I have been using all 3 since 2004 and I seem to have stopped my hairloss cold, although I haven't really regrown much of what was lost. Personally I have found the finasteride to be the most effective for me. I will probably discontinue use of 2 & 3 soon if I don't start seeing some noticeable progress by 2008. I have recently switched to dutasteride from finasteride to see if that will stimulate new growth.

You can buy these drugs from online pharms for much cheaper than what a retail pharmacy will charge. The reputability of the online pharmacy is always a question, but I have bought from the same 2 places for the past 3 years and have not noticed any additional hairloss since I started taking the drug, so either my genetics were programmed to not lose any hair during the same timeframe as when I have been taking the drug, or the drug is legit.

I take a pic of the top of my head once a month right after I get a haircut. I then date the pic and use these as a reference to track progress. Hair loss/regrowth is a very long process and you will drive yourself insane if you try to check it by looking in the mirror everyday.

I think it's better to just shave the head or cut the hair real short -- that's what I did once I started losing my hair. The worst part is when a person is starting to lose their hair. At first you continue to comb it like you have always done it. Then as the hair lost continues, it begins to look like you are trying to hide your hair lost by combing over it. Then you try other styles -- like combing straight back -- but doing this feels like you are highlighting your baldness while feeling a little unkempt (because there is no hair on top but you have long hair on the back and sides). You feel self-conscious all the time.

The best thing to do is to shave it off or cut it real short (like a buzz cut). Once you do it and get used to it, you feel liberated. No longer are you self-conscious about being bald and you feel clean-cut.
